Green onions are herbs with excellent spicy flavors that are used in many Slavic dishes. In addition to taste, the fragrant stems contain a lot of vitamins and microelements that are indispensable for the human body. And what about the bulbous smell, which not only makes you hungry, but also kills pathogenic bacteria. To strengthen the immune system in winter, when the season for fresh homemade vegetables is long over, gardeners are increasingly growing onions on the windowsill. How to grow green onions and how difficult is it?

Agrotechnics of culture

You can grow onions on the windowsill at any time of the year, but winter is the ideal time to grow onions not only to strengthen the body, but also due to the temperature regime. So the optimal temperature for the appearance of greenery is +25 C.

A few days later, when the height of the sprouts reaches about 2 cm, the container with the plants is transferred to the southern or southeastern window sill.

Note! If there is not enough light, the feathers will lose their appearance and taste. The main sign that the plant does not have enough sunlight is wilting, yellow stems. Therefore, the plantings that live in the northern or western part of the house, in the shortest winter days, need to be illuminated with fluorescent lamps.

Green onions

Important! You can also light up homemade onions all night - this will only have a positive effect on the plant. Vegetable culture develops according to the principle: the more light, the faster it grows.

In summer, it is better to equip a mini-bed in a medium-lit place, since direct sunlight can burn delicate stems. Moreover, at temperatures above + 30C, feathers stop growing altogether.

Despite the demand for lighting, it is not recommended to expose trays with onions to light immediately after planting. In order for the bulb to quickly form a good root system, it is preferable to put the container in a cool place where there is practically no light.

Landing

Many quite affordable items can be used as a landing container: special containers, cut off 5-liter bottles or food trays or hammered from wooden boards. Inventive gardeners who do not have room to arrange mini-beds plant onions in a 5-liter bottle filled with earth, with slots on the sides. Not only does such a vertical bed take up a minimum of space, it also decorates the house with its original look.

How to properly plant onions on greens at home? You can buy soil for growing onions at a flower shop or prepare your own by mixing turf, peat and rotted manure. To destroy the bacteria accumulated in the substrate, the soil is calcined at a temperature of 60 C. For a better outflow of water, vermiculite, expanded clay or any other drainage material is placed on the bottom of the container.

Important! To prevent excess water from stagnating, small drainage holes are made in the bottom of the container with crops and put on a pallet.

The choice of planting material

Having decided on growing greens, one of the most important things in the process is the selection of the seed. For spicy stems, it is best to plant medium-sized onions. If you plant a vegetable that is too small, the feathers will accordingly be thin, and in the opposite case, too thick. Good results at home are shown by shallots or, as most gardeners call it, kuschevka.

Pre-landing preparation

How to sprout onions so that the greens form as soon as possible? Experienced gardeners prepare the bulbs for planting in this way:

  1. The tails of the bulbs selected for sowing are cut, and the roots are left in their original form;

Note! Cut off the top so that the cut diameter is as large as possible. In this case, the bulbs will have the largest number of growth points, as a result of which the crop yield will increase significantly.

  1. Germination of onions occurs in water: immediately before planting, the planting material is soaked in slightly warm water for 24 hours.

Thanks to these little tricks, greens appear an order of magnitude faster than untreated planting material.

How to plant sprouted onions in the ground? The bulbs are placed in shallow pits, and then the soil is lightly squeezed around them. The distance between the seeds can be any, since this value is not important for greenery.

Growing onions in water

How can you grow onions at home if you don't like to tinker with the ground? Many will be surprised, but growing greenery can be arranged in a tray of water.

Note! The use of chlorinated water is not allowed as it has a detrimental effect on plants.

Such a "landing" is carried out according to the following plan:

  1. A little water is poured into a baking sheet or a plastic shallow rectangular container, and then a cardboard tray in which chicken eggs are sold is placed in it;
  2. The pre-processed sevok is laid out in cells;
  3. As soon as the onion has absorbed the water, add liquid as needed.

Important! It is impossible to plant bulbs directly in containers of water - they quickly rot.

The water in the tray, where the roots have not yet formed, is changed 2 times a day: ideally in the morning and in the evening. After the stems appear, the water is changed once a day. So that mold does not appear on the bottom of the dishes and on the roots themselves, the container and the lower part of the onion are washed under running water.

It is possible to prevent the development of a putrefactive process with a 4% solution of hydrogen peroxide or a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

Greenery in this design grows like water. The first crop can be harvested 12-15 days after planting.

Forcing feathers in sawdust

How to plant onions on greens at home in sawdust? Wood shavings or sawdust are an excellent natural material used by gardeners for mulching crops and growing some crops, one of which is green onions.

How to grow healthy green onions at home in this environment:

  1. Purchase loose or pressed sawdust from a zoological store;

    Sawdust

  2. For the purpose of disinfection, as well as in order to make the briquettes looser, the material is carefully spilled with boiling water;
  3. Peeled from excess husk and trimmed onions for 2-3 hours are soaked in a weak solution of potassium permanganate or Microsporin. In the case when there are no such funds, you can use a saline solution (1 tablespoon substance per 1 liter of water);
  4. Planting material is placed in such a way that there is no free space in the tray.

The feathers grow tender and fragrant. You can harvest the crop 15 days after sowing. The average height of the greenery is 35 cm.

Growing greens in a bag

You can also grow onions in a simple package. All that is needed to apply this method is the actual bag and roll of toilet paper.

Growing onions at home in a regular package is arranged like this:

  1. Clean, trim and process planting material in disinfectant and growth-stimulating fluids;
  2. At the bottom of the package, several layers of paper or a layer of sawdust, 2-3 cm thick, are laid, and then the material is irrigated with warm water;
  3. The bulbs are laid next to each other, without deepening;

    The bulbs are laid next to each other

  4. The bag is inflated, tied with a rope and placed in a dark, cool place for 2 days;
  5. After the root system is well formed, an impromptu bed is placed on the windowsill;
  6. As soon as the feathers grow, the bag is opened. An open container stands until the time of harvest.

With this method, the feather will only grow for 10 days. This is the fastest way to grow healthy greens.

Due to this speed of forcing, some enterprising gardeners have started their own feather growing business. To obtain greenery, a greenhouse or an apartment with a large footprint is used. The year-round sale of onion feathers requires minimal physical effort from the owners and brings a steady income.

How to care for onions

Growing green onions at home is practically no different from growing indoor flowers. All a crop needs to quickly form stems is water and nutrients.

Onion care

Watering

Water the onion with lukewarm, settled water immediately after the soil in the container dries out a little. Green feathers will be juicy and tender if watering at the root is alternated with spraying from a spray bottle. It is impossible to keep the bulbs in a viscous swamp or a substrate dried up on a stone - any plant cannot withstand such stresses and will soon die. If possible, on warm days, the mini-bed is transferred to the balcony for several hours.

Top dressing

In order for the soil to contain the maximum amount of trace elements, mineral and self-prepared fertilizers are used.

Among industrial mixtures for feeding onions, universal liquid fertilizers for indoor flowers are well suited. Such mixtures are introduced according to the scheme specified by the manufacturer.

Industrial mixes for feeding onions

To feed onions grown in water, add to 1 liter of water:

  • 2 tsp mineral fertilizer with a balanced composition;
  • 5 g of wood ash;
  • 2 g superphosphate, 1.5 g each potassium chloride and ammonium nitrate;

Fertilizers begin to be applied from the moment the sprouts begin to turn green.

Those who are afraid of chemical compounds and prefer to pamper plants with organic mixtures can prepare an infusion from eggshells. To do this, the crushed ingredient is poured into a jar, filled with water and insisted for 5-7 days. The liquid is applied as a root or foliar feeding.

Onions planted in a sawdust tray do not need feeding. The only thing that sometimes needs to be done is to spill the plants with a weak solution of hydrogen peroxide (1 tablespoon of 3% liquid per 1 liter of water).

Important! In the summer, you need to spray the green onions growing on the window in the morning or evening. During the day, when the sun shines most brightly, manipulation is not recommended, since the scorching rays of the sun can burn the delicate stems.

Harvest

The feather begins to be cut 2.5-3 weeks after planting the onions. Moreover, you need to start harvesting from the feathers that are at the edges.

Green onions

In this way, the greenery growing in the center will be able to reach its maximum size. To have green onions on the table all year round, the time interval between plantings should be about 10-15 days. The main sign that it's time to choose green onions is the inclination and barely noticeable wilting of the stem.

The onions who sell the harvest, the day before harvesting, water the onions abundantly and only then completely cut off the rosette of feathers. The brown plaque that forms on top of the bulb is removed from the lateral process. The sprouts prepared in this way, as a rule, have a good presentation and high organoleptic characteristics.

To prepare a feather for long-term storage, this is about 3 months, you need to do a number of manipulations:

  1. Choose tall and brightly colored plants;
  2. Trim dry ends or mechanically damaged parts;
  3. Wash under running water and dry;
  4. Cut into slices.

Green onions

Green onions can be frozen. Thanks to this method, greens can be stored for about 12 months. There are 2 ways to keep onions long:

  • The feather crushed into pieces is laid out in small molds and poured with water;
  • The pieces are kept in boiling water for 3-4 minutes, thrown into a drushlag and scattered into small bags or forms.

Some housewives who constantly grow onions at home dry the spice.It is recommended to dry greens in well-ventilated, warm rooms. It is impossible to lay out the pieces in direct sunlight, since this way useful vitamins evaporate faster from them.

If the necessary drying room is not available, the greens are protected from the sun with sheets of white paper, which are laid on top of the fragrant blank. You can make sure that the feather is dry by looking at its structure. Only crunchy, breaking pieces can be laid for the winter. Onions harvested raw will quickly mold and rot.

Important! If you properly harvest and prepare for storage, you can save the onion for quite a long time.

Growing green onions on your windowsill is incredibly easy. All that is needed for the stems to break out of the bulbs is a little patience and strength. Due to such a simple agricultural technology, not only people who have a summer residence, but also high school students can do forcing a feather on the balcony. To get a good harvest of a homemade spicy plant in winter, you only need a couple of trays, a handful of seedlings and a glass of fertilizer.
