Many owners of personal plots and summer cottages are faced with the problem of an invasion of wasps and hornets. Insects help gardeners to obtain a richer harvest by destroying pests, but they can also be dangerous to human health. The bite of one hornet or wasp can cause severe allergies, so insects should not be allowed to settle on the site. For an apiary, such a neighborhood does not bode well either. Wasps and hornets destroy bees, thereby causing irreparable damage to beekeepers. Different methods are used to get rid of unpleasant neighbors. A wasp and hornet trap is an effective means of removing intruders. There are factory-designed traps that can be purchased in the store, and it is also possible to make them yourself from improvised means.

A wasp or hornet bite can have various effects on the body. The usual edema may appear, and anaphylactic shock may occur.

How to make an effective trap

To get rid of dangerous insects and not to expose yourself and loved ones to the danger of getting a poisonous bite, you need to study the options for making traps.

Hornet trap

How to catch hornets:

  • Ordinary plastic bottles are best suited for this purpose. You need to carefully cut off the top so that you get a small funnel. The plug does not need to be used. At the bottom of the bottle, bait is laid out (pieces of fruit, sweet vegetables). Then the funnel is inserted with the narrow neck down. This design will allow insects to get inside, but they will not be able to get out, because they will crawl along the walls of the bottle. This is the cheapest and most durable DIY hornet trap.
  • A similar insect trap can be made from a glass jar with a screw top. With this method, you need to cut a cross-shaped hole in the lid with a sharp knife, and bend the edges inward. A sweet bait should be placed on the bottom of the jar and the lid should be screwed on. Insects will be well caught for sweet syrup, fermented jam and fish.

How to catch hornets correctly

For greater efficiency, you need to make several traps and place them throughout the site, preferably away from the paths along which people walk. As the trapped insects accumulate, the devices are replaced with new structures. If you don't want to make other traps, you can empty these without neglecting security measures. First, it is recommended to spray any insecticidal agent inside the bottle or can. After the hornets have died, you can open the trap and shake out the contents.

The manufactured structures can be hung on trees. To do this, you need to make holes in the bottles and insert a string or rope there. If, after some time, only a few insects have been caught in the trap, it should be moved to another location.

Bank trap

Important! If there are a large number of insects in the area, it is best to take large containers for making traps. In this case, you do not need to change and empty structures too often.

When to set traps

In the spring, queens and young hornets begin to fly, this is the best time to set homemade traps. Getting rid of insects during this period will allow you to protect your site from settlement and attacks by intruders. But we should not forget that if hornets appear in small quantities, you should not get rid of them, since they are good pollinators of plants.

The hornet trap will forever protect the backyard or apiary from a large number of predatory insects, and the owners do not have to worry about the safety of the household. Moreover, it is easy and simple to make it from improvised means with your own hands.
