Having livestock and poultry on the farm, the owner is forced to stock up on grass. It's unrealistic to do it manually - you need a suitable tool Someone buys the latest models of garden tools, someone works the old fashioned way. The braid for the grass has not lost its relevance in our time. It is also suitable for those who want to create a beautiful grassy lawn in the country.

Once in Russia, the grass was not mowed, but reaped using sickles. This work was hard, because the workers had to bend into "three deaths". But evolution has changed the situation over time.

Additional Information. The initiator of progressive ideas in Russia was Peter I. He borrowed the idea with a scythe in more developed Europe. In order for the tools to be widely used, it was even necessary to issue special decrees.

Now in the shed, every conscious owner has a hand scythe for mowing grass. Despite the fact that manufacturers produce a lot of universal self-propelled equipment for mowing, the "old woman" does not give up her positions.

There are 3 types of braids:

  • Pink salmon (also called bagpipes) has not particularly taken root among the people - when mowing, you have to bend because of the crooked shaft; but the tool has a long curved cutting blade, which allows you to work in an area with bumps and overgrown bushes;
  • The most common in everyday life is Lithuanian, which allows you to work with a straight back; it is distinguished by a long braid and canvases of various sizes;
  • There is also a serpunk - something between a scythe and a sickle; differs in compact dimensions.

Each type of tool requires specific working skills. A tool is selected based on the conditions in which it will be used.

Hand braid

The design of the scythe for cutting grass is quite simple, it includes only 4 elements.

What does the lithium braid consist of?

DetailDescription
CanvasThis is the main element of the tool, which is a sharp curved blade (knife). Made of tool steel. The canvases have different lengths (No. 5-10), according to which they are marked (for example, No. 5, recommended for private use, means 50 cm)
KosovishcheLong, perfectly straight shaft, on which the cutting blade is fixed. Also has various lengths (maximum - 2 m). Spruce is considered the best material for manufacturing.
GripsThere are 2 of them: one for the working hand, the other for the supporting one. They can be fixed motionless in certain places of the mow. It is more convenient to choose a braid with adjustable handles to fit the height of a particular mower
MountConsists of 2 parts: wedge and ring. The first one is made of dry wood and is used to fasten the canvas to the kosovishche. The ring is necessary for reliable adhesion of the entire structure with a bolt fastening

For work on garden plots, it is recommended to use cast iron numbered 5 or 6 - their sizes are most suitable for this. They easily mow grass not only on open lawns, but also around trees, bushes, along the beds.

Note! Longer knives (No. 8 and 9) are chosen for haymaking in open areas (in meadows, fields). Although it will be more convenient for the elderly and women to wield the tool number 7.

You can find many garden tools on sale under the brands of popular brands. For example, you should pay attention to the hand-held grass braid Fiskars, where quality, beautiful design and low cost are organically combined.

Mechanical scythe

A hand scythe for grass requires maximum tension of all muscles of the body. Citizens who come to the dacha periodically, such a tool may seem a burden. Therefore, their eyes are more often turned to the mechanical version, which makes the work as easy as possible.

The purpose of the device is the same - mowing the grass, but it's difficult to call it a scythe. Structurally, this is a completely different unit called a lawn mower.

The tool is a special unit on wheels equipped with grass cutters, which work like traditional scissors. In this case, one blade is stationary, the rest are workers.

The power-driven lawnmower is easy to operate - just push the handle in front of you. The handle can not only be adjusted to the desired height, but also set the appropriate tilt. In addition to the manual unit, manufacturers suggest paying more attention to the spindle version.

Spindle lawn mower

This device is a set of knives of the same name, which are included in the process from the energy set by the spinning wheels. By the principle of cutting grass, 2 types of working bodies can be distinguished:

  • in contact - the blades of the knives intersect;
  • in non-contact - the cutting blades are located at a short distance to each other, the plant is mowed due to the capture and supply of grass to the knives.

Spindle devices require constant speed control and poorly work the area. Therefore, it is not rational to use these units on large areas.

Note! If we compare a spindle mower with a manual one, then the second one is easier to operate, allows you to quickly process a large area and do it efficiently.

Folding braid

Leaving to the dacha, some take a tool with them, the traditional Lithuanian in this regard is not entirely convenient. In some cases, it can be dangerous due to the fixed structure.

Note! Previously, the metal braid for grass had the same design as the Lithuanian. Folding options are now more common on the market, making the tool more compact and mobile.

The shaft and blade are somewhat shortened in comparison with the classic version of the cast. There are no handles in many models - instead, there is a rubberized nozzle at the upper end of the braid so that the palm does not slip.

When folded, the blade is tightly pressed by the sharp part to the kosovish. It is brought into working position easily and quickly. It is enough to unscrew the "lamb" at the junction of the tool elements, turn the blade 90 degrees and fix it.

Working with folding grass braids is convenient only in small areas for a short time. Therefore, it is more rational to keep the tool at hand exclusively for ennobling the suburban area. This option is not suitable for haymaking.

What is a mini braid

The summer resident's options are limited if he buys a small tool - a serpentine braid. It is called so because the canvas resembles a sickle. On a straight, powerful metal handle, no more than 1 m long, a curved blade of 22-35 cm is attached. Recently, it is often produced in a folding version.

But working with such a mini-scythe in large areas is inconvenient, since you constantly have to either bend over or squat. A small tool is the most suitable option for maintaining flower beds, manually trimming lawns, mowing small areas, and removing weeds from the garden.

Tips for choosing braids

When choosing a mowing tool when buying, various factors are taken into account. First of all, you need to decide on the characteristics of the site that will be processed. If you have a Lithuanian on the farm, then on difficult terrain or mountainous terrain, you cannot manage it - you can break a scythe.

Pink salmon in this situation will be a more acceptable option, although it is inconvenient to manage it on ordinary grass of a flat area. For mowing hard plants, it is better to purchase a serpentine, although you will have to “bow” to each grass during operation.

Having decided on the type of instrument, they pay attention to other criteria:

  • inspect all parts of the braid for damage;
  • check the fastening of the main parts of the tool;
  • if the braid is folding, it is necessary to check the reliability of the fixing screw - "wing";
  • determine the quality of the canvas - the metal of the correct hardening should ring on impact;
  • the knife and the braid must be flexible enough, otherwise the tool will break very quickly;
  • a quality braid has a well sharpened cutting edge.

The last factor is productivity. It should be borne in mind that the blade dulls very quickly. Therefore, along with the scythe, you should also purchase a sharpener, which they keep with you during work.

 Important! The tools are selected according to the height of the mower. The length of the string should be such that the tool is comfortable to hold in your hands.

The weight of the braid is also important. The best option for casting blade No. 5 is a lightweight tool suitable for summer cottages. If there is a need for longer blades, it should be taken into account that with each extra centimeter of the knife, the mass of the braid itself increases.

A hand-held mowing tool is an excellent choice for those who are engaged in beautifying their summer cottage from time to time. Having gotten used to wielding a tool, the whole process can be turned into an entertaining outdoor recreation.

In order for the braid to serve as long as possible, it must be properly looked after: beating and sharpening in a timely manner, pay attention to the safety of the fastening. Store the tool in a dry place away from sunlight, out of the reach of children.
