The name of this variety speaks for itself. Russian vegetable growers worked on the selection of the giant and, through various experimental crosses, bred a variety that amazed everyone - the Pink Giant tomato. The author of the tomato is the director of "Sadservice" - Vladimir Nalizhity, registration took place in 2001, the originator was the firm "Nk LTD". Compared to other varieties, the variety of this tomato stands out favorably, the creators can be proud of the Pink Giant tomato, its characteristics and description of the variety.

Characteristics of the variety

This type of tomato is intended for growing outdoors, under a film covering and in greenhouses. The bush is tall, with very large fruits, for which the tomato was nicknamed “The Giant Pink”. Distinctive characteristics of the bush:

  • indeterminate plant type;
  • the height of the bush reaches 2 m in greenhouse conditions, and in open ground, without a growth restrictor, it grows up to 5 m;
  • strongly developed root system, powerful, branched;
  • light green, branched, strong stem, with villi;
  • leaves are dark green, small in size, with denticles at the edges, grow sparsely;
  • the first inflorescence is formed high - after 8-9 lower leaves, then repeats after 3-4 leaves;
  • the inflorescence is characterized by a simple brush, in some subspecies of the variety there is an intermediate one.

On the stem, 2-3 clusters are formed with large fruits, which look like this:

  • bright pink or crimson;
  • rounded-flattened, with deep longitudinal grooves, ribbed;
  • tomato weight - 350-400 g, under favorable conditions the fruit can grow up to 2 kg;
  • the pulp is firm, not watery;
  • matte bright pink skin, with green streaks at the stalk;
  • each fruit contains 4-5 seed chambers, with medium-sized seeds;
  • the taste is sweetish, with a slight sourness.

Interesting. One giant pink tomato sliced into a salad can feed several people.

Tomato belongs to mid-season varieties, after planting in open ground, tomatoes ripen in 3-3.5 months. Under favorable conditions, 3-5 kg of large raspberry-colored tomatoes can be harvested from one bush.

Not resistant to all diseases, requires treatment from pests. It tolerates transportation well, but not overripe.

Tomato Pink Giant

How to grow

A distinctive feature of this variety is that the Pink Giant is a very large tomato. To grow a decent harvest, you should pay special attention to growing healthy and strong seedlings.

Seeds

Seed preparation for planting is done in the last decade of February. A week before sowing, the seeds should be prepared in this order:

  1. For 5 hours, soak the grains in a solution of potassium permanganate for disinfection;
  2. Soak tomato seeds with a special agent to stimulate growth;
  3. For vernalization, they are placed in the cold for 3 days;
  4. Soak for 4-5 days in room water for germination;
  5. Rinse sprouted seeds carefully.

A week before planting seedlings, the soil for seedlings must undergo disinfection treatment. To do this, it is sprayed with pale pink potassium permanganate and treated with copper sulfate. Three days after disinfection, the soil is fertilized with a solution of mullein, bird droppings, superphosphate.

In the soil saturated with fertilizers, make small pits, no more than 1 cm deep. Between them the distance should be 2-3 cm. Put 2-3 grains in each. Excess seedlings when picking will be rejected or transplanted to another place.

Dive

The seeds of the pink giant tomato are fast germinating. Sprouts appear within 4-5 days.

Important! The pink giant is a fast growing plant. So that it does not begin to stretch, the hatched seedlings are kept for a week in the cold, at a temperature not exceeding 15 degrees Celsius. Then they are transferred to a warmer place, with a temperature of 22-24 degrees Celsius.

Picking

You should not allow quick pulling of seedlings. When the first three leaves appear, the seedling dives. 2-3 days before that, the soil is well moistened, the seedling is carefully taken out, the middle, longest root is cut off and again planted in the ground. This technology contributes to the good development of the root system of the plant and to increased yields. During the pick, weak seedlings are removed.

The second time the seedling is dived after 10 days.

Seedling care

Strong and healthy seedlings are the key to a bountiful future harvest. Therefore, the seedlings of the Pink Giant must be provided with:

  • air temperature - no more than 23-24 degrees;
  • illumination - within 12-14 hours;
  • timely watering - prevent the earth from drying out, but also do not flood the plant;
  • fertilization of the soil with organic and mineral fertilizers, as well as a growth stimulator.

7 days before planting in open ground, the plant begins to harden. To do this, boxes with seedlings are taken out for several hours in a cool room, with a temperature of 9-11 degrees Celsius. 2 days before planting, the soil is well moistened so that the plant can be removed more easily.

Moistening the soil

Landing in open ground

If the tomato is planted in open ground, you must choose a calm place where sunlight will be available during the day. The soil should be fertilized in autumn, cleaned of weeds and disinfected with a solution of copper sulfate. It is desirable that parsley, cabbage, carrots grow there before.

For fertilization in the fall, use diluted mullein and bird droppings. Before planting, the soil is fertilized with superphosphate, wood ash, tincture of green grass. In addition, it is necessary to apply mineral fertilizers. The plant requires regular feeding, otherwise the yield will be low.

The tomato is tall and branchy, so it is necessary to plant seedlings sparsely. For 1 sq. meter - no more than three seedlings. The distance between them should be at least 70-80 cm. For better ventilation of the bushes, it is better to plant them in two rows, leaving 80 cm for the passage. There should be at least 70 cm between the rows.

Care

The pink giant in fertilized soil and outdoors can grow taller than a country house. Therefore, to increase yields, it is necessary:

  • pinching - the top edge of the plant is pinched at the required height, and it stops growing up;
  • pinching - to pick off all stepchildren growing from the axils of the leaves;
  • tying - when planting next to a bush, a 2 m long peg is driven in and a plant is tied to it;
  • leave no more than 4 ovaries on the brush, remove the rest;
  • leave no more than 3-4 brushes, otherwise the stem will break under the weight of the tomato.

Form a Pink Giant into one or two stems. For the second stem, the lower stepson is left, which, growing up, will also require a garter.

For top dressing, mineral, nitrogen and potash fertilizers are used three times: during planting in open ground, during flowering and when the fruits begin to form.

Watering and pest control

Abundant watering is harmful to this variety. It is necessary to water the plant often, but little by little. Water in the evening, under the root, without getting water on the leaves. Once a week, water with mineral-enriched water, for this use a tincture of onion husks, eggshells and green cut grass.

Watering seedlings

To fight diseases, treat tomatoes with a solution of manganese, boric acid, iodine.

In order to prevent the development of fungal diseases, it is necessary to moderately moisten the ground and provide good ventilation.

To combat the Colorado potato beetle, whitefly, late blight, black leg and other diseases, pesticides are used in the doses recommended in the instructions.

Advantages and disadvantages

The opinions of vegetable growers about this variety differ, but there is a general impression about the Pink Giant.

Advantages:

  • excellent tomato rich taste, the optimal combination of sweetness and acid;
  • subject to all the rules of agricultural technology - a large yield;
  • does not require abundant watering, tolerates drought well;
  • Greenhouse cultivation is also suitable for the giant in the open field;
  • in an immature form, it tolerates long transportation well.

Disadvantages:

  • requires special care to increase yields;
  • requires adjusting the growth of seedlings;
  • the need for pinching, pinching;
  • too large a giant fruit is not suitable for canning as a whole, but tomato juice from the Pink Giant is superior in quality to similar products of other varieties of tomatoes;
  • requires pest control.

All of these disadvantages are not such - these are the usual working days of vegetable growers. But, with a little effort, growing this variety, you can admire yourself and surprise your friends with an unsurpassed tasty giant grown by yourself.
