Most tomato lovers prefer large-fruited varieties with a sweet tomato flavor. These are the tomatoes of the Sugar Giant variety. Bright red tomato weighing 600-800 grams, sweet in taste, attracts lovers of vegetable salads, homemade sauces and ketchup. Every gardener dreams of growing such a vegetable in his garden.

From the history

Tomato Sugar giant is quite well known to Russian gardeners and is actively cultivated in personal plots. This is not surprising. After all, this variety was bred by our breeders about twenty years ago. The tomato got its name because of its sweet, delicious taste.

In fact, 100 g of the fruit of the Sugar Giant contains up to 4.5-5 g of sugar, while in other varieties of tomatoes this figure does not exceed 2.5-3 g. For this feature, this variety is known among vegetable growers as the tomato of Sugar.

The name of the variety reflects another feature of it - gigantic growth. The length of the stem of a plant in greenhouses reaches 1.3-1.4 m, and in open ground conditions it can grow up to 1.8-1.9 m. Therefore, the Sugar Giant is referred to as the so-called indeterminate crops. Their apical growth has no restrictions, which contributes to the formation of new fruit clusters practically throughout the vegetative period of the plant. This increases the yield of the variety.

Sahara tomatoes are a late-ripening variety. The period of fruit ripening begins on the 110-117 days after sowing the seeds. However, in the southern regions of Russia, tomatoes may ripen a little earlier, when the cool weather of the northern regions pushes the ripening period.

Sugar giant

Given such features of a thermophilic culture, you need to take care of the seedlings in a timely manner. It is necessary to plant seeds with the expectation that by the time the seedlings are planted in a greenhouse or open ground, it is at least 85-95 days old. Then it will be possible to feast on sweet tomatoes in mid-July.

Sugar giant plants begin to bloom on the 97-108 day of the growing season. It is worth noting that this variety of tomatoes has a very extended period of fruiting. Moreover, many ovaries are always formed. On each fruit cluster, their number reaches 5-6.

Attention! In order for large fruits to develop on a plant, it is necessary to normalize the number of ovaries. The optimal number of developing fruits on one hand is two or three. The rest of the ovaries should be removed by pinching.

You can also increase the yield of the variety by removing side shoots. Although this agricultural technique will have to be used quite rarely, since the intensity of their growth is low. The leaves are rather large, drooping. Leaf mass at the level of average indicators.

From one plant, you can get up to 5.3-6.5 kg of sugar tomato, taking into account the description of the characteristics of the variety.

The main varietal advantage of the Sugar Giant is the large, fleshy, heart-shaped fruits. The full maturity of the tomato is characterized by a deep red color. The average weight of tomatoes is about 350-400 g. There are few seeds in the pulp.

On a note. The fruit is covered with a thin, delicate skin. Therefore, this category of tomatoes is not intended for transportation and long-term storage, but it is excellent for preparing fresh salads and thick tomato juice.

Agricultural technology of cultivation

Among summer residents, the sugar giant tomato is very popular. Seeds of this variety can be easily found in retail stores and online stores. The production and distribution of seed material is carried out by the firms "Siberian Garden", "Aelita", "Russian Garden", "Uralsky Dachnik" and others.

Price offers for one package of seeds (10-20 pcs.) Range from 12 to 45 rubles. However, most firms in the descriptions for the product indicate the wrong characteristics of the variety. In addition, there are photographs of completely different varieties of tomatoes on the seed packages. So, the company "Gavrish" offers to buy the seeds of the Sugar Giant, which has a yellow fruit.

Growing

Important! According to tomato growers, the germination rate of packaged seeds of Sugar tomatoes is 85-94%. For cultivation, it is best to purchase seeds from amateur gardeners or harvest them yourself.

Growing seedlings

Strong seedlings are the key to a rich tomato harvest. Therefore, the correct potting soil must be prepared before planting seeds. To do this, take one part of sod soil, leafy soil, humus and river sand and mix everything thoroughly. Prepare a solution of 30 g of superphosphate, 30 g of potassium sulfate and 10 g of urea per 10 liters of water. Pour the soil mixture with the resulting solution. The seedling soil is light, loose and nutritious.

Note! The soil mixture for growing tomato seedlings should not contain dense and large lumps. Moisture should be well absorbed into the soil, so garden soil is not suitable for these purposes. A balanced ready-made primer is best purchased from a store.

Before planting tomato seeds, any soil must be disinfected. To do this, soak it with a strong hot solution of potassium permanganate.

In order for the seedlings to be friendly and healthy, the seed material should be disinfected with the "Fitosporin-M" preparation, the seeds should be kept in the solution for at least 25-30 minutes and dried to a state of flowability.

Spread tomato seeds on the surface of the ground and sprinkle with a mixture of sand and soil with a layer of 0.5-0.7 cm. Cover the box with seeds with polyethylene and put in a warm place (+ 24 + 25 ° C) for 3-5 days, until shoots appear. After the shoots appear, remove the film. Place the seedlings in a bright place.

Additional Information. So that the black leg does not destroy the seedlings, it must be watered with a warm solution (+ 26 + 28 ° C) of potassium permanganate. At the same time, pollinate the soil and tomato seedlings with sifted ash.

After 3-4 leaves appear, the seedlings should be dived and planted in separate pots. Grow in a well-lit window. Shade out of open sunlight and rotate every 2-3 days so that plants develop evenly and do not stretch.

Transplanting seedlings into the ground

Seedlings of the Sugar Giant in a greenhouse or open ground can only be planted after the threat of frost has completely disappeared. In the central regions of Russia, this time is the end of May.

To obtain a rich harvest of the Sugar Giant, the sprouts must be planted at a distance of 0.45-0.5 m to each other. In this case, the distance between the beds should be at least 0.7 m. The optimal number of bushes per 1 m² is 3 specimens. In addition, experts recommend forming a varietal bush in two stems.

The first weeks of growing tomato seedlings in the beds should be watered daily and protected from the hot sun. Daily loosening promotes active respiration and nutrition of the developing roots.

The fruiting period does not require additional watering. Sugar tomatoes tolerate a short drought well, but they need timely feeding.

To stimulate the amicable ripening of fruits, you can use a solution of nitrophoska (20 g) and dry sodium humate (20 g) in 10 liters of water.

The pickling in tomatoes of this variety is moderate. But to increase yields from time to time, side shoots must be removed. These simple agricultural techniques allow you to get a rich harvest.
