Currant is a healthy berry saturated with vitamin C. This is a berry of the Gooseberry family. It is black and grows on a lush green bush. There is never enough of this berry, because it is healthy and is well used both fresh and in jam, compotes, jams, syrups and other types. To propagate it, you do not need to buy new planting material every season, you can cut currants yourself.

Collection of planting material

For propagation of currants, it is best to use the vegetative method (cuttings).

To do this, you need to select high-quality stems. Here the reference point goes to the appearance of the shoot: it should begin to grow stiff, but at the same time be still green. The main indicator for choosing a good stem is its elasticity, it should bend well, not break and should not be damaged or sick.

Since the tops of the shoots have increased vitality, it is better to cut the blanks from them.

Collection of planting material

Each cutting should have 4-5 buds, 10-15 cm long. The lower cut is made at a right angle, 5 mm below the kidney. The upper cut is made 2-3 cm above the kidney, also at an angle.

To prevent the sections from drying out, the workpieces must be wrapped with a damp cloth.

Cutting currants in water

This is one of the methods of vegetative propagation of berry bushes. Collected or purchased planting material with treated sections is dipped into water by ⅓ of the stem length. Water is added as it evaporates. The first roots with this method erupt after 14 days. This method is considered more common. After the roots appear, the culture must be planted in the soil.

Choosing a landing site

Reproduction of black currant by cuttings in spring requires preliminary preparation of a place for its cultivation. To do this, 21 days before planting, you need to dig holes up to 40 cm deep and up to 60 cm wide. At the bottom of the planting pit, you need to put fertilizer and sprinkle it with earth.

The distance between the holes should be kept about 1-1.5 m on each side. The bushes are lush and need space.

Cutting currants in water

The berry loves the sun, and the place for the growth of the bushes should be unshaded and windless, not close to the fence, so as not to deform the branches and the bush itself, not very close to wild trees (they will draw out all the juices from the ground with their roots and prevent the plant from developing normally) ...

Preparing the soil for breeding

Be sure to prepare the soil before planting currants in it. For this, fertilizers are applied to it, but in moderation so as not to burn the young root system. Most often, manure is used for feeding (the main thing is not fresh), ash and mineral fertilizers, which are sprinkled with a small layer of earth and watered a little with water.

Planting cuttings

After the shoots have started up the roots, a place was prepared in advance, and the holes were fertilized, the cutting is placed in them at an angle of 45 °, covered with earth and watered abundantly. The depth of the stem should be 6-7 cm. The lower bud should be in the ground, but at the very top, slightly powdered with earth, and the upper one should stick out well above the ground. At the very top in the fresh air, 1-2 eyes should remain.

Planting currant cuttings

A plant planted with this method is taken after about 15-20 days.

Shoots can also be planted at an angle of 90 °. But experienced gardeners are planting at a smaller angle, since the stem layering makes it possible for the following shoots to grow correctly.

Important! Reproduction of black currant by a vegetative method in spring gives a harvest for 3 years.

Planting currant shoots can be carried out both in autumn and spring. But with each type of landing, you need to take into account its own conditions. For example, regardless of the season, the soil after planting currants must be mulched.

Interesting. The amount of nutrients in it depends on the length of the shoot.

Care for cuttings after breeding

After the rooting of the currant branch has passed, it is necessary to ensure proper and thorough care for it. If the branches grew under cover, then it must be gradually removed (this is in the case of planting after winter), left overnight for the first 2 weeks. In the middle of summer, the amount of watering decreases, and there is a need for feeding.

The first times it is better to feed the root with liquid organic mixtures. Then change such top dressing to fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium in order to strengthen and develop the root system.

Watering currants

It is imperative to carry out weeding and loosening of the earth in order to remove pests and fungi along with the roots of the weeds.

At an air temperature of 30 ° C and above, the cuttings should be shaded and not watered in the daytime, but irrigated in the evening, when the sun has almost set.

Important! In the first year, flower brushes appear on young bushes, but they should not be allowed to bloom, because during this period the bush will weaken and stop its growth and development, and will not yield a harvest.

Care of young seedlings for 2 years

The care of young currant bushes is different for 2 years. The next year, after planting the shoots, pruning is carried out, and no more than 4 buds are left on each branch. The emerging ovaries and flowering are removed, with the aim of the appearance of lateral shoots.

Loosen the soil carefully so as not to harm the surface roots. Abundant watering is carried out (10-15 liters per plant). The bushes are fertilized with bird droppings and mullein.

Useful Tips

Experienced gardeners advise to follow some rules when growing and propagating bushes at home:

  • When choosing planting material, pay attention to the mother plant (a healthy bush is needed for divorce);
  • It is better to harvest material in the early morning, until the dew has left the grass, or in cloudy weather;
  • Sawdust can be added to the soil;
  • Water the young bushes abundantly for the first 3 weeks;
  • To check if the shoot has taken root, you need to pull it by the top;
  • Seedlings are fertilized 3 to 4 times per season.

Currants need regular care

For the harvest to be good, every 10 years it is required to rejuvenate the bush using the cuttings method.

Important! After moving a branch with roots into the soil during the spring, it should be provided with a small greenhouse or covered with foil.

This way currants can reproduce not only in spring, but also in autumn. At the same time, caring for a young stem is different.

To grow, propagate and breed black currant bushes, it is important to properly care for them and carefully separate the shoots.

There is no better way how to propagate black currants by cuttings in spring than preliminary soil preparation and a correct cut of the stem.

To propagate this berry, it is only required that the shoot cut at an angle, wrapped in a damp cloth, gives roots. Then it is placed in the soil with fertilizer, watered abundantly and covered with a film.

Breeding with this method is very effective and easy. Growing currants on your own is interesting and less expensive than buying shoots.
