Strawberries belong to berry crops, often grown in suburban areas. Beds are usually allocated for this plant, however, berries have the property of deteriorating when in contact with wet soil. To preserve the presentation, gardeners began to use special supports for strawberries.

The strawberry stand and bush holders are used to support the pedicel so that it does not lean to the ground when the fruits begin to ripen and gain weight, as moist soil has a negative effect on the quality of the berries. A layer of sawdust or hay used as mulch does not always provide adequate protection against gray mold spores that may be in the soil layer. Spores make the fruit flabby, fluff appears on them, taste and characteristic color disappear.

Strawberry bushes protect the adaptations from snails with slugs, which appear in the garden in large quantities at the time of fruit ripening. At night, gastropods will gladly feast on berries located in the immediate vicinity of the ground. If you don't use a strawberry holder that supports the fruit, you can lose more than half of the crop.

Important! The use of such props may not play a big role for those gardeners who grow strawberry bushes for themselves, but if the harvest is for sale, then such losses promise a substantial loss.

Variety of holders

In the store, you can see different shapes of tools that allow you to keep strawberries intact. They are even divided into several types:

  • film;
  • plastic holder;
  • grid;
  • bent wire.

In more detail, how the above options for protective devices are arranged:

Strawberry stand

Film

In large farms, black canvases are used, which are spread between the bushes. This trick allows you to speed up the ripening of the berries by attracting more sunlight. Additionally, the material (it can be woven or polyethylene) protects the planting from slugs, excess moisture and contact with the ground, which may contain pathogenic bacteria.

Grid

This strawberry support is manufactured and marketed in a variety of variations. She will not allow contact with the ground, and therefore the crop ripens almost intact. The appearance of the nets is similar to a spider web, divided into several sections that can be adjusted. This design can be installed both after planting strawberries, and used for already grown-up plants.

Important! The main disadvantage is the short service life. After some time, the mesh becomes fragile, due to constant interaction with the ground and temperature changes.

Wire

Compared to the previous version, the aluminum wire has a longer service life. A DIY strawberry support is perfect for plants that have trouble rooting outlets.

The holder is similar to the letter M, fits well into the ground and will perfectly support the berries. The material used to make the support is rust resistant and has the required ductility. An additional plus is that the rack can be rearranged at any time to the desired location.

Plastic

A stand for strawberries from plastic bottles is very popular with gardeners due to its simplicity of design and its effectiveness. It is best to opt for a 1.5 liter container.The bottle is trimmed on both sides so that there is a berry bush inside.

Important! The bottle will not only protect the crop from pests, but also create a thermal effect around the planting, which will speed up the ripening of the fruit.

How to make different holder designs

Each of the options presented is attractive and convenient in its own way, but there are other options as well. How else to make support for fruit crops:

  • In order not to waste the strawberry crop, an aluminum wire bent in the form of a spiral is used. The lower loop should have a diameter as the width of the bush, and the upper one should be 2 times larger. Initially, the spiral is made about 20 cm in height, when the plant enters the growth phase, it can be stretched.
  • Also, under the berry rosette, a wire frame is placed in the shape of the letter "P". Such a strawberry stand protects the fruit from touching the ground and makes it easier to process the soil layer under the bushes, and also allows you to apply fertilizers without problems.
  • There is another device called a "pyramid", and it can be used for several years. It protects the crop from moisture and contact with the earth layer. For manufacturing, you will need container boards and thin perches.
  • Another option is the squares located at the ends, which are made from strips having a width of 40-50 mm and a thickness of 10-15 mm. The size of the stand is easy to calculate: the height of the bush, the length of the peduncle and the width of the row spacing are used. The squares must be connected with poles having a length of 2 - 3 m. Holes are made in the planks to which the perches will be attached. Such trellises are placed between the rows tightly to each other for the entire length of the bed.

Important! Strawberry support must be installed before fruiting begins. When the berries are formed, the peduncles will begin to fit on the perches due to the increase in weight. Under the support and berries, you get a blown space. After the harvest is harvested, you need to disassemble the structure, dry it and store it until next season.

Planting strawberries

The following device is called a basketball hoop. It is very easy to do it yourself, the main thing is to purchase the necessary materials:

  • wire coil (diameter 3 mm);
  • pliers with side slots;
  • PVC tubes (diameter 6 mm), which can be replaced with rubber tubes or sheath from an electric cable.

Note! It is recommended to give preference to galvanized wire. It will not rust, which will ensure the durability of the fixture.

From the coil you need to measure 800 mm of wire and insert it into the side slot of the pliers, and then bite off the desired length. A wire with a large diameter will not fit into the tool slot. Having measured half the length, it is clamped with pliers and bent 90 °. Then the wire must be bent again at the same angle.

Next, the wires should be inserted into the tube so that the metal end remains about 15 mm, which must be crocheted. The tube serves to increase the contact area of the peduncle and the ring and does not allow the plant to break due to the weight of the berry.

The smooth part of the wire is bent 90 °, and the rest, where the tube and the hook are, must be bent so that a ring is obtained. The hook snaps into place at the top.

Need a basketball hoop

After the appearance of the fruits, you need to separate the ring, pushing it apart so that the peduncles with the harvest fit inside. The rod must be thrust into the ground and the ring with the hook must be clicked. It remains to straighten the flower stalks with berries and distribute them evenly throughout the ring, so that it looks like in a basket.

Important! The height is adjusted so that the berries lie on the ring with a slight stretch.

To save the harvest, you can try using a set of disposable plastic forks, just break off the middle cloves, stick into the garden bed and place a bunch of berries in an empty space. The method is simple, fast and convenient.The crop will ripen without touching the ground or becoming a delicacy for slugs.

The only drawback is that the sharp part of the fork can cut the legs of the berries, and therefore it is recommended to use this option for high varieties of strawberries with medium-sized fruits.

Making such devices allows you to save the harvest not only for yourself, but also for sale. Most of the options are easy to do with your own hands from improvised means, while the costs will be minimal, and the work will not take much time.
