The pyramid is a garden bed that rises above the ground, which allows you to significantly save garden space, having a large number of strawberry bushes (strawberries) on itself. This shape makes it easy to harvest, water the berries and, most importantly, does not block the light on the lower levels.

Step-by-step design establishment

There are three pyramid beds - and quadrangular. It's quite easy to build such a structure yourself. Depending on the possibilities, metal, wooden boards or dense plastics are used for such a bed. The most convenient use of wooden boards.

Having decided to make a bed of a pyramid for strawberries with your own hands, the drawings are thought out in advance. The most suitable design is pre-drawn, the correct dimensions are determined, the corresponding sketches, diagrams are made and the necessary material for the design is made.

Strawberry pyramid

Attention! When using wood, all building components must be varnished or treated with an antiseptic, which will protect the wood from the influence of moisture, parasites and fungi.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. The site for the construction of the garden bed is chosen unshaded, open (away from tall trees, buildings), always with a leveled surface.
  2. Initially, the base of the garden is prepared - the grid is placed on the site where the future structure will stand. The mesh can be metal, plastic, fine-mesh. It will protect the structure from small rodents.
  3. The prepared boards are connected (knocked down) with glue, nails, metal corners or screws into boxes. It turns out five pieces. The connections must be strong, otherwise the structure will be short-lived.
  4. The upper corners of the joints are smoothed with a planer to avoid injury to the berry.
  5. The lowest, fundamental tier of the ridge is installed on the prepared base, in the center of the pyramid a vertical pipe (PVC, sewer) is fixed, in which holes are made in advance for irrigation, and a plug is placed on the bottom. Then the step of the bed is filled with earth, lightly tamped, leaving at least 4-6 cm to the edges, so that there is a possibility of feeding the berries.
  6. A mixture of compost and manure is poured around the pipe in the form of a cone-shaped hill to feed the plants.
  7. Then a second, slightly smaller tier is placed on top of the lower one, filled with prepared soil in a similar order. The procedure with tiers is repeated until the structure of the pyramid bed is completely constructed.
  8. Planting berries. For a construction of this size, 70 seedlings are optimal. Planting strawberries in tiers begins at the bottom of the bed. On each side are planted: 1 row - 7, 2 row - 5, 3 - 3, 4 - 2 and on the last - two seedlings.

Depending on the desire and capabilities, a pyramidal strawberry bed can contain from 3 to 9 tiers. The main thing to consider is that each subsequent floor is 30-35 cm less than the previous one on each side.

The specified five-tiered strawberry pyramid bed has the following dimensions:

  • 1) the first level - 2.2 * 2.2 meters;
  • 2) the second level - 1.7 * 1.7 meters;
  • 3) the third level - 1.2 * 1.2 meters;
  • 4) the fourth - 0.7 * 0.7 meters;
  • 5) fifth - 0.2 * 0.2 meters;
  • 6) mesh - 2.4 * 2.4 meters;
  • 7) the width of each board is 0.25 meters.

The optimal width of the boards is 3-5 cm, the lowest, base box can be made from thicker ones. The completed structure is painted, whitewashed, decorated at the discretion, making the garden even more comfortable and beautiful.

By the way, you can make a multi-tiered strawberry flower bed with your own hands, even from ordinary tires. The tops of the tires are cut off, for convenience, an electric jigsaw is used. The main thing is to observe the proportions of the beds: the first tire is the largest (from heavy vehicles), then their gradual reduction. The soil layer should be wide enough for planting strawberry bushes.

On a note. You can use boxes, flower pots, barrels, or even basins. Now they are already selling ready-made tiered beds in special stores.

Materials required for construction

To equip such a bed you will need:

  • the main material from which the bed structure will be made: boards, metal, plastic;
  • fastening material (medium-sized nails - 0.2-0.5 cm, or self-tapping screws);
  • spirit level (building level);
  • tape measure, meter;
  • screwdriver;
  • plane;
  • trumpet;
  • drying oil, varnish;
  • prepared soil for filling the ridge, shovel.

There are no specific restrictions on the choice of material and tools; for the construction of such a strawberry garden, you can use anything you like: logs, slate or polycarbonate, rectangular chest of drawers, containers, old barrels.

Features of strawberry care

Pyramid

There are no special requirements for how to grow strawberries in multi-tiered boxes, the main concern is watering.

The planting material is planted in the ridge from the beginning of March to the end of July. In exceptional situations, planting is possible until September, but then it is necessary to provide the seedlings with frost protection. Planting bushes too close is not recommended.

When growing crops in such vertical beds, they pay attention to some of the nuances:

  1. Before planting, the soil is well supplied with manure (black earth), peat and sand, in proportions 2/1/1, fed with mineral fertilizers, dolomite flour, wood ash or chalk;
  2. Planting strawberry seedlings is done 1-2 weeks after laying the soil so that it has time to compact enough and soak in moisture;
  3. They use any varieties, of any ripening period, preference is given to berries with a low aerial part, since strawberries with powerful tops require a more sparse planting, respectively, the number of plants at each stage will be much less. Remontant varieties look vivid - they can decorate the garden with delicate flowers and bright berries all summer long.
  4. Strawberry seedlings must have a strong root system, the root collar is placed at ground level;
  5. The culture prefers sunny places, sheltered from the winds, ideally the south-eastern part of the garden.

Watering

Watering should be regular, since the area is already quite limited, and strawberries cannot tolerate a lack of moisture. Optimal use of the drip irrigation system, mulch is used to retain moisture. Irrigation is carried out in the mornings or evenings, under a bush, avoiding contact with leaves and berries. On hot days, watered 3-5 times a week, on cool days - less. Use only clean, warm water. You cannot water the strawberries directly from the well, the water must be infused.

Loosening the soil and weeding strawberries

Systematic soil loosening is carried out throughout the season. Weed removal should also be regular.

Top dressing

They are enough for strawberries 3 times per season: in spring, during the formation of ovaries and after harvest. The presence of phosphorus, nitrogen, magnesium and potassium is mandatory.

Quality care is important

Shelter for the winter

In this regard, the garden bed needs a fairly good insulation, otherwise the strawberry roots will die. If possible, the best option would be to transfer the beds to a sheltered room, if this is not possible, the structure is buried in earth, covered with spruce branches or hay.

Low pyramids can be equipped with a special structure made of thin boards, slats and roofing material (burlap, lutrasil). The soil near the garden bed is insulated with organic mulch.

Trimming the mustache, removing old, yellowed, dry leaves is carried out in the same way as with strawberries in ordinary beds. Mulching is carried out in the spring. A complete replacement of strawberries is carried out for 3-4 years (depending on the variety), for this, 1-2 of the strongest tendrils are cut off from the healthiest and fluffiest bushes in early spring and transplanted to a new place, in this case on a pyramidal bed.

Advantages and disadvantages

A DIY strawberry pyramid bed has its advantages:

  • saving suburban space;
  • faster soil warming in the spring season, which favors earlier flowering and fruiting of strawberries (for 7-14 days);
  • the possibility of easy cover of the garden bed during frosts;
  • the appearance of weeds is becoming a rare occurrence;
  • the root system is protected from moles;
  • berries practically do not contact the ground, do not stain and do not rot, the disease of strawberries with gray rot is reduced to zero;
  • convenience of harvesting.

But there are also negative aspects:

  • the soil quickly freezes, the plants suffer from cold weather;
  • the soil needs frequent feeding and watering.

Such a construction of beds is definitely a profitable option for gardening, but these recommendations should not be neglected, otherwise the strawberry harvest will be far from ideal.
