Thanks to breeders, summer residents can start breeding unusual berry crops that stand out not only in the color of the fruit, but also in the color of the petals. Pineberry strawberries are gaining particular popularity, as well as other types of decorative strawberries that can decorate the garden landscape.

About decorative strawberries

The unusual white Pineberry variety is the result of crossing Virginia and Chilean strawberries and immediately attracted the attention of gardeners.

First of all, decorative strawberries are distinguished by their appearance: the unusual colors of the berries.

At first, the white color of the fruit confused consumers. The question immediately arose: is the berry edible? It turned out that you can not only eat strawberries, but also enjoy the taste. True, it is far from strawberry, but close to pineapple (hence the name of the hybrid).

Some gardeners believe that Pineberry is a whole group of varieties with white berries. But it is not so. The Pineberry strawberry is a cultivar itself. The confusion is most likely due to the variety of names assigned to this berry: "pineapple", "white dream", "snow-white soul", etc.

Interesting. Among the decorative berries, there are other types of strawberries that bloom with non-traditional petals. They give buds of various colorful shades, which allows gardeners to decorate the landscape in an original way.

Decorators are planted in open ground - the plants can comfortably endure winters. From May until frost, the strawberry meadow will be decorated with an abundance of shades.

Decorative strawberry

Varieties with yellow flowers

Among the decorators there are strawberries with yellow flowers. Her berry is red, but you can't call the fruit tasty. Outwardly, seedlings are difficult to distinguish from horticultural crops and it is possible to understand that you have purchased lawn strawberries when the bushes begin to bloom.

Note! In addition to yellow single flowers, the plant also differs in fruits. In color, they are similar to garden strawberries, but in shape, the berries are perfectly round and directed straight up in growth.

Strawberries are edible, but taste bad. Therefore, varieties with a yellow color are used exclusively for decorative purposes. Among the most popular are the following varieties:

  • Ducheney, in terms of fruiting, belongs to remontants. The rosettes take root quickly and begin to produce berries in the first season. The length of the whiskers ranges from 10 cm to 1 m, strawberries very quickly capture the nearest space, covering it with a beautiful carpet;
  • Elizabeth II blooms from May until frost, throwing out ovaries, akin to Physalis. The fruit, similar to a ruby, framed in silver, comes in different sizes - it all depends on the fertility of the soil. The berries have an unusual taste, but not for everybody.

You can propagate yellow-flowering strawberries vegetatively and by seeds.

Pineberry

In the family of hybrids, Pineberry stands out for its unusually snow-white berry color.

The following description applies to most white strawberries:

  • the berry barely reaches 2.5 cm in diameter;
  • inside the flesh is also white, but some varieties may have orange;
  • the height of the bushes ranges from 20-30 cm.

Unusual garden strawberry belongs to remontant varieties, but the berry in both runs gives a small one. During development, the fruit changes color from green to white. The maturity of strawberries can be judged by the seed blotches in the pulp, which become deep red by the time of harvest.

The white remontant has both advantages and disadvantages, which should be familiarized with before purchasing seedlings.

Pros and cons of Pineberry varieties

Advantagesdisadvantages
· Resistance to diseases typical of common varieties;

· The hybrid retains its grade during cross-pollination;

· Due to the absence of a special protein that affects pigmentation, Pineberry is hypoallergenic;

Unusual color does not attract birds, therefore strawberries are insured against pecking

· Fruits are suitable for consumption only fresh;

· Not suitable for transportation and storage;

· In the rainy season, the berry is prone to rot;

· Poorly acclimatized in the open field;

· Even in a greenhouse gives 1 sq. m no more than a kilogram of fruits

Important! The hybrid is not self-pollinating - the bush emits a female-type color. Therefore, Pineberry will need a neighborhood with other subspecies.

Growing pineberry strawberries

Strawberries with pink flowers (as well as reds and yellows) are less demanding on growing conditions and care. As for the Pineberry, you will have to tune in to maximum attention to the culture so that it does not lose its main uniqueness - with improper agricultural technology, the fruits can change color from white to pink and even red.

Breeding a hybrid

Do not look for Pineberry seeds on the market - this method is not acceptable for a hybrid. In this case, the grade is not transferred so, the berry loses its attractiveness and tasting qualities. You should not deal with dividing strawberries, but the mustache that the mother bush throws out is an excellent option.

Note! During the growing season, the plant gives many such layers, it is recommended to root them immediately. It is not worth worrying about the fact that this will interfere with the quality of the main crop. In remontant varieties, the more whiskers, the more active fruiting is.

To make it easier for the mustache to take root, the aisles are periodically loosened. In the fall, after harvesting, the cuttings with a rosette are cut off from the mother bush and transplanted to their place, where it will develop for 3-4 years.

By purchasing 1 seedling, you can very quickly grow a decent Pineberry strawberry plantation. In order for the cultivation to go well, high-quality seedlings are initially selected, in which the leaf is juicy, bright green, without spots and damage.

Pay attention to the thickness of the horn, so that it is more than 7 cm. Carefully examine the root system - it must be a well-developed fluffy ball at least 9 cm long.

Landing conditions

Pineberry is intended for cultivation in a greenhouse. If reproduction is carried out outdoors, then it is better not in the open field, but to plant the bush in a pot. The containers are installed in an area with other pollinating varieties.

Ornamental strawberries take the same approach as other hybrids.

When planting in the ground under a film shelter, a loose soil with an acidity of pH 5.0-6.5 is used, in which holes are made 10 cm deep. Strawberries are planted in a pre-watered hole along with an earthen clod. In this case, the apical kidney should not be covered with earth.

To allow the bush to multiply, free space is provided around. Therefore, the distance between the seedlings is kept about 30 cm, in the row spacing - 45 cm.

Care features

Ornamental strawberries take the same approach as other hybrids. Special attention is paid to spring gardening, if Pineberry is grown on an open plantation:

  • the site is freed from winter shelter;
  • remove damaged foliage and old flower stalks;
  • the aisles are loosened, trying not to damage the roots;
  • carry out the 1st feeding - 1 g of potassium permanganate and copper sulfate per bucket of water.

When ovaries appear on the bushes, it is recommended to pour boric acid on the hybrid strawberries (5 g of powder per bucket of water). They are also fed with complex mineral water and a solution of bird droppings (mullein).

During the period of abundant flowering, wood ash is used (for 10 liters of liquid - 2 glasses of the product).

The repairing white variety is not indifferent to watering. The amount of moisture depends on the weather conditions. The number of irrigations is increased when the buds appear and the berries begin to pour. Watering is stopped immediately before harvesting, then the fruits will not become watery.

To prevent abundant irrigation from stimulating the growth of weeds, the beds are mulched using peat, sawdust or small straw. Such a substrate will help retain water in the soil for a long time, the strawberries will not get dirty.

Crop care includes winter preparation. After harvesting, the soil in the beds should be loosened and fertilized with organic matter in combination with a mineral complex. Then the plantation is covered with straw mats or spruce branches.

Those who have just started to get involved in decorative varieties of strawberries are faced with its various names. This was the reason for finding the necessary information. Frequently asked questions include the following: what is Indian strawberry? This is a type of false strawberry. The main representative is the Indian cinquefoil, which became the ancestor of the remontant varieties with yellow leaves. Two of them are described just above.
