Pineapple strawberry is an unusual variety of delicious berries. It is mainly grown in regions with a warm climate, but with the right approach to planting and care, it can be grown in central Russia.

History and description of the variety

Pineapple strawberries were obtained by crossing Virginia and Chilean strawberries. The hybrid was developed by Hans de Jong (Dutch breeder). The main distinguishing feature of the berries is their color. Ripe strawberries are white or yellowish in color, the berries taste like pineapple, hence the variety got its name.

The strawberry variety is sometimes called White Pineapple, White Dream, or Pineapple.

Strawberry Pineapple (variety appearance)

On a note. The variety has only female flowers. For cross-pollination to occur, other strawberry varieties are planted in the neighborhood.

Strawberry Pineapple variety is considered a dessert. It is used in cooking for decorating cakes, added to cocktails, ice cream.

How to propagate pineapple strawberries

There is no way to propagate a hybrid by seeds. When growing strawberries from seeds, the berries are small and will not inherit the characteristics of the parent plant.

Council.The repaired variety can be propagated by dividing the bush.

Mustache reproduction is considered the best option. An adult bush is capable of throwing out a large number of whiskers. After picking ripe berries, the soil near the strawberry bushes is loosened, the layering is distributed over the garden bed and dripped a little. In autumn, the cuttings have a root system. The mustache can be cut off from the mother bush and transplanted into a permanent place.

Agrotechnics

Recommendations for choosing seedlings

  • If the seedlings are bought in a store, then special attention is paid to foliage and roots. The leaves should be a deep green shade without blotches;
  • A young seedling should have at least three leaves without visible damage;
  • The roots are fluffy in appearance, they should be at least 7 cm long (seedlings with an open root system);
  • When buying seedlings in pots, the roots should sprout and protrude at the bottom of the container.

What seedlings should not be chosen:

  • It is not recommended to choose seedlings with pale leaves and stems elongated in length. Such seedlings are considered unviable;
  • If the leaves are lethargic, slightly dried;
  • If wrinkled foliage is visible on the seedling, then this is a sure sign of the presence of strawberry mites;
  • If small blotches or dark dots are visible on the leaves, then this indicates the presence of fungal diseases.

Strawberry Pineapple Seeds

It is better to buy seedlings in specialized stores, so the chance of running into bad seedlings is much less.Choosing healthy strawberry roots is the key to successful cultivation.

Site requirements

Pineapple strawberries are preferably grown in greenhouses. The berry is thermophilic. If you plan to land in open ground in central Russia, then you need to choose the southern part of the site.

It is undesirable to get direct sunlight on the garden. The berry may turn pink. Therefore, it is recommended to shade the bed with agrofibre.

The variety grows well on different types of soil. It is preferable to choose a black earth type of soil, which contains ash. The optimum acidity level is 5-6.5 pH.

On a note. Strawberries do not tolerate stagnant water in the soil. Therefore, it is advisable to make a bed on a hill or bring additional land so that the seedlings grow slightly above ground level. So you can save the crop during a rainy summer.

A strawberry bed is prepared in the fall. The earth is dug to a depth in the bayonet of a shovel, loosened, cleaned of the remnants of weed. Organic (5 kg per 1 sq. M) and mineral fertilizers (40 g per 1 sq. M) are applied to the soil. During the winter, fertilizers are completely absorbed into the soil, and it will be fertile.

Good predecessors for Strawberry Pineapple are:

  • Roots;
  • Cereal crops;
  • Leguminous plants.

Planting seedlings in open ground

Important.If the plot for strawberries has not been prepared since autumn, then fertilizers must be applied 14 days before the planned planting in the garden. Humus, droppings, ash are added to the garden bed.

Seedlings are distributed in two ways:

  • One line. The recommended distance between bushes is 20-30 cm, between rows - 60-90 cm. After a while, the empty space in the aisle is overgrown with new bushes. If the mustache grows more than 15 cm from the row, then they must be cut;
  • Two-line. The interval between the bushes is 20 cm, the gap in the line is 30 cm, the distance between the rows is up to 70 cm. All whiskers that appear are cut off.

Pineapple strawberry planting scheme:

  • Make small holes for seedlings. The interval between seedlings is at least 30 cm, 60-90 cm should be left in the row spacing;
  • The roots are not deeply buried in the ground. The root collar should be flush with the ground. The seedling is placed in the center of the hole, the roots are carefully distributed, the empty space is covered with earth and the hole is lightly tamped with your hands;
  • After the garden is poured with warm, settled water.

Care rules

In order for the seedlings to quickly take root in a new place and in the future give a good harvest, the bushes must be regularly looked after. Care rules are standard. But there are some nuances:

  • Watering. The soil should be moderately moist. In dry summer, it is recommended to water the berry daily by sprinkling. During the flowering period, only the soil is watered. Water stagnation should not be allowed, this leads to rotting of roots, berries, the appearance of diseases in the plant. The water should be no colder than +16 degrees. Water the bushes in the morning or evening hours, when the sun is inactive;
  • Weeding. Strawberry Pineapple grows well in fertile soil. Weeds can quickly fill up empty spaces in your garden bed, preventing your shrubs from developing normally. Therefore, regular weeding with roots is important. After the bed is cleared of weeds, the soil is loosened, deepening the garden tool by a maximum of 5 cm;
  • Mulching. After weeding and loosening, the beds are watered and laid with mulch. Straw, pine needles, and cut grass are used as a mulch layer. The procedure allows you to maintain an optimal level of soil moisture and prevents weeds from germinating;
  • Top dressing. Strawberry bushes are fed three times a year. The first time the procedure is carried out in the spring. You can use a complex fertilizer - Nitrofosku. When the first ovaries of buds begin to appear, the bushes are fertilized with organic fertilizers: droppings, mullein and wood ash is added to the soil. The last feeding is done during the flowering period. Use mineral, potash and phosphorus supplements;
  • Prevention of diseases and pests. Before the flowering period, bushes should be treated with Aktofit, Fitoverm. Insecticides are used when the air outside warms up above 17 degrees. If the spring is cold, then it is better to use Caesar or Taurus. Preparations prevent attacks from pests and diseases;
  • Pruning. The procedure is carried out to keep the bushes in order. Overgrown strawberries bear poor fruit. Pruning is recommended after the seasonal harvest. The mustache is trimmed with garden tools. When pruning leaves, you must leave a stem of at least 10 cm, you cannot cut at the root. Only dry, damaged leaves are removed. Only the first few whiskers are left for breeding. If strawberry planting is not planned, then the mustache can be removed completely.
  • Preparing for the winter. In the fall, weeds are not removed. Strawberry bushes are covered with straw, dry leaves or agrofibre. This will save the plant from winter frosts.

Advantages and disadvantages

The variety is valued for its taste characteristics. Gardeners noted the advantages of Pineapple strawberries:

  • White berries do not attract birds;
  • The variety is resistant to diseases;
  • The hybrid does not require special care when growing;
  • Berries can be enjoyed from May to July.

The disadvantages include:

  • Low yield. You can count on a large harvest when grown in a greenhouse;
  • Fruits are not stored for long and are difficult to transport;
  • In rainy weather, there is a risk of rotting the plant.

Pineapple strawberries are an unusual dessert that has a sweet pineapple flavor. Growing a variety in a summer cottage will not cause trouble for gardeners. With the right choice of planting site and adherence to the rules of agricultural technology, you can get a good harvest of white strawberries.
