Sweet garden grapes attract many summer residents, but this culture requires a lot of attention. It does not have a definite shape and grows in the form of a climbing vine, so it must be attached to some kind of support. You need to figure out how to properly tie the grapes in order to provide them with the necessary conditions for growth.

Why tie up garden grapes

Under favorable conditions, grapes grow rapidly. If the plant is not tied up in time, it will encircle the nearby garden crops, and also complicate the harvesting process. The main advantages of the garter:

  • improved ventilation. Regular airing will protect the plant from fungus;
  • grapes get a lot of sunlight and heat. This helps to increase yields;
  • facilitates the care of horticultural crops;
  • the color of grapes in a tied state opens up and pollinates faster;
  • the plant does not stretch, grows evenly and pleases the eye.

What grape varieties need a garter

Without a timely garter, the vine will grow erratically. This applies to almost all varieties of culture, but it is mandatory for the following varieties:

  • Isabella grapes. One of the most popular varieties. It has a high growth rate;
  • grapes Nina. Its berries are large enough to require a lot of sunlight to ripen;
  • Arcadia grapes. The bunches of this variety are much larger and heavier than other species.

When to tie

There are 2 ways to tie:

  • Spring - it is also called dry. Manipulations are carried out before bud break. At a later time, it is not recommended to carry out the garter: there is a risk of damaging the kidneys, which in the future threatens with a significant reduction in the yield.
    Upon completion of the garter, it is necessary to feed the plant with complex fertilizer (1 tablespoon).
  • Summer garter (many gardeners call it "green"). After it, the growth of young shoots is accelerated, the plant is protected from bad weather and receives the necessary amount of sunlight and heat. The manipulations are repeated depending on the growth of the garden crop. So, over the summer, grapes are tied up 3-4 times.

For the garter, you can use a variety of materials, such as twine, thin rope, hooks of any shape and size. The most popular among winegrowers are nylon ribbons cut from women's tights. First of all, with their help, young shoots should be suspended. These tapes are durable and can last more than one season.

What is a trellis and what is it for

The trellis is a simple structure, which consists of two pillars dug into the ground at an equal distance of 3-3.5 meters from each other with a wire stretched between them in several tiers. You can choose the number of tiers yourself. As a rule, there should be at least four of them. The lower tier should be placed 50 cm from the ground.

Types of trellises

Experienced growers distinguish two types of devices:

  • 1-planelocated vertically.Such a device is considered optimal for tying the plant, the grapes get the maximum amount of sun and grow faster. Gardeners love it for its ease of use, easy access to the bush for maintenance purposes, and the availability of materials for its construction (trimming and remnants of unused boards, blocks).
    However, such a device also has disadvantages: such a trellis may not withstand a tall bush, only 1 fruiting vine can be placed on it.
  • 2-plane trellis. It can be placed in two rows on either side of the vine at a distance of just over half a meter, or installed at an angle. Such a trellis has the same advantages as the first option, but there are also disadvantages: the need to use more materials, the difficult process of preparing the plant for winter.

How to arrange grapes on a trellis

Since grapes should be tied up in early spring, you must initially adhere to some of the rules of this procedure:

  • first, the stems damaged by frost are cut off the plant;
  • the primary branches are placed on the first tier in the form of a fan;
  • young shoots are tied at the level of the second tier. It is recommended to mount them horizontally;
  • shoots that appear in the summer must be fixed on the 3rd and 4th tiers in an arcuate manner.

Tying grapes to a trellis does not require any special skills. Subject to the above rules, the grape bush will grow evenly, receive the required amount of sunlight and nutrients.

Types of fasteners

Any amateur gardener wants to facilitate the process of caring for a plant, especially if at least 4-5 bushes are planted in their summer cottage. When deciding how to quickly and reliably tie up the vine, you cannot do without improvised means. Any tools can be used here - hooks, wire rings, orchid holders, clamps, stapler, glue gun.

Note! Depending on the material used, the grapes can be fastened using knots.

By tying the vine horizontally, you can attach it to the trellis using aluminum wire. For vertical shoots, twine or textile tape is used.

Forming a bush in the form of a fan

Few beginner gardeners know how to tie grapes to a support. Any scheme is suitable for a plant, but the fan shape remains the classic option, which many winegrowers have fallen in love with. Such a scheme involves the drawing up of branches in the form of sleeves that go beyond the boundaries of the base of the plant.

Note! A culture formed in this way can be easily removed from the trellis and placed in a dug hole, followed by a shelter for wintering.

To form a fan in the first year of a seedling's life, only 2 shoots are left in the plant. These, in turn, are considered sleeves. They need to be shortened to three or four buds. During harvest, two sleeves with 2 shoots are left. In the third year of life of grapes during dry pruning, 2 shoots are left again. Grape vines are tied to the trellis horizontally, and new branches are tied vertically. If the plant has been tied correctly, the garden grapes should assume the shape of a fan.

How to tie up young grapes correctly

During the first two years of life, it is not recommended to mount it according to the standard scheme. The vine is tied to small pegs, or a miniature trellis structure is made. I use soft materials as tools that are not able to injure the stems. The best option would be to install a grid with large holes, along which the tied young plant can grow in height.

General recommendations for tying grapes

In order not to damage the plant, you need to learn a few simple rules.

Do not tie up the vine vertically. This is the most common mistake among newbies.Vertical fastening threatens with low yield, damage to shoots. Also, with the vertical arrangement of the bush, only the upper buds develop. The plant should be placed horizontally for several reasons:

  • All vine shoots receive the same amount of nutrients.
  • The bunches grow large and ripen faster.
  • Due to effective ventilation, the plant is not threatened with fungal diseases.

The vine should be secured in such a way as not to damage the stem. Using tight wire or line can injure grapes and cause infection. The stems can be tied up with soft ribbons or fastened with special clips.

Do not place the stems in one direction. This will lead to thickening of vegetation, lack of ventilation. Shoots should be attached on different sides.

Important! If the grapes are loosely fixed on the trellis, this can lead to disastrous consequences. With the growth of the culture and the thickening of the stems, the unreinforced support can fall apart from the strong wind.

When attaching the vine to the trellis, it is not recommended to bend the shoot, nutrients will not flow to it. In this case, the shoot may dry out and fall off. As you know, an injured bush gives less yield. Therefore, it is necessary to arrange the grape branches with a slight bend.

There is no rush to finish the garter faster. In a hurry, the stem can be ineffectively secured. During a gusty wind, the grapes rub against the trellis, which can lead to injury to the vine. Experienced growers advise tying the shoots in the form of the number 8, so the garter material passes between the trellis and the grape stem.

Some gardeners claim that grapes can be grown without a garter, which is a misconception. In any case, the plant needs support, otherwise the bush will not be able to develop, grow and bear fruit properly.

It is not easy to grow such a whimsical culture in the country. Any gardener needs to know how to tie up grapes so that every year the plant pleases with its bountiful and sweet harvest.
