When growing cucumbers, it is not enough to prepare a place for planting and take care of the planted plants. This vegetable crop can be attacked by insects or it starts to hurt. There are other problems with these vegetables, and one of them is that the ovaries of cucumbers turn yellow and do not grow. The main reasons for what happened and how to deal with it - you can read about this and much more below.

The best conditions for growing cucumbers

When growing cucumbers in different conditions - on the beds in the garden, indoors or on the balcony (windowsill) in the apartment - first of all, you need to choose the right varieties for planting, suitable for specific growing conditions.

The main thing when planting cucumbers in the garden beds is to choose the right place. The site should be sunny, protected from gusts of wind, without stagnation of moisture in the ground.

Yellowing of the strings

It is best to prepare warm beds in advance, into which fallen leaves, fallen needles, branches, sawdust, straw and high peat are introduced. Cover the top with a layer of fertile soil (from turf, peat, sawdust and compost or humus) and form a ridge with a height of about 0.5 m. Water the bed with water at a temperature of about 50 ° C, tamp and spill it with a solution of copper sulfate or Bordeaux liquid to disinfect.

Important! The best soil for planting cucumbers is sandy loam or loamy, rather loose.

Caring for cucumbers in the beds consists of regular watering, weeding and loosening of the beds, adding a mulch layer and periodic top dressing. Cucumbers love moisture, so the topsoil should be moist all the time.

At first, after disembarking at night, a greenhouse is built in the beds to protect delicate plants from a night cold snap. It is better to tie the growing lashes to the trellises, so the shoots will receive more light, and at the same time it will be easier to care for them and easier to collect ripening greens. Top dressing is usually applied every 12-14 days, alternating organic and mineral fertilizers, as well as foliar and root dressings.

Advice! It is better to water them by sprinkling, in this case the soil will be moistened gradually, and the water droplets will partially evaporate, increasing the humidity of the air.

In greenhouses, cucumbers grow and bear fruit better than in the open field, because it is easier to provide these plants with the necessary conditions indoors: temperature regime, suitable humidity and periodic ventilation. It is better to prepare the soil in the greenhouse yourself, it should consist of turf, humus and sand, and its acidity should be neutral.

The air temperature in the greenhouse should be from +14 to + 24⸰С. At this optimum temperature, cucumbers grow and bear fruit well. Indoor humidity should be above 75%, as cucumbers love moisture not only in the soil, but also in the air. It is also important to carry out top dressing by applying fertilizers during the growing season, flowering and ripening of fruits. Plants should be tied up in time to make them easier to care for. And do not forget about the formation of lashes. The main shoot is usually not pinched, but wrapped around the trellis and allowed to grow down, the lower side lashes should be pinched over 2 flowers, and the upper ones over 4.

You can also grow cucumbers on a balcony or windowsill, getting good yields.

Note! There are many home-grown cucumber varieties on the market.Moreover, they can be grown all year round. The main thing is to maintain an appropriate temperature regime and illumination.

The room temperature should be maintained in the daytime - about 22-23⸰С, and at night - about 19⸰С. If necessary, you can use any heating devices to heat the plants.

For normal growth and ripening of fruits, cucumbers need 12-hour daylight hours. In winter, the plants must be supplemented, for this, any lighting fixtures are usually used. It should also ensure regular watering and adequate humidity. To do this, you can put pallets with water next to the plants, and watering is done as the top layer dries.

Causes of the disease, its development

Why do cucumber ovaries turn yellow, if plant care is carried out according to all the rules? There may be several reasons for this:

  • flowers are insufficiently pollinated... After all, there are not so many self-pollinated varieties of cucumbers, but mainly cucumbers grow on the plots, which need flying insects for pollination. And often vegetable growers have to manually pollinate the branches. You can attract bees and wasps to greenhouses by installing containers with honey solution or diluted jam next to the plants;
  • plantings are too thick, as a result, the lashes do not have enough sunlight and oxygen, so the flowers will form in less quantity or turn yellow and fall off;
  • poorly formed whips... If you do not pinch the extra side shoots and stepchildren, do not form whips, the plant will not have enough nutrients for the normal development of the ovaries, the stem throws them off;
  • violation of the irrigation regime... If the plant lacks moisture, it sheds the ovaries and dries up on its own, with abundant soil moisture, the root system begins to rot. Violation of the irrigation regime not only harms the development of plants, but can also cause diseases;
  • if lashes are just beginning to develop, and ovaries are already formed on them, the plant discards them, since nutrients are needed for the development of the stem and leaves;
  • fromvegetative mass is too developed- a lot of foliage and extra side shoots. At the same time, food is spent on their further growth, and nutrients simply do not reach the ovaries, so they turn yellow and fall off;
  • ripe fruits not harvested on timethat require additional power supply. In this case, all substances go to their development, and the rest of the ovaries fall off due to lack of nutrition;
  • lack of basic mineral elements - nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium.

The main diseases leading to the shedding of ovaries are bacteriosis, fungal diseases, root rot and mold. All these diseases develop especially quickly if it is too cool and there is no ventilation in high humidity. This is especially true for cucumbers grown in greenhouse conditions - the ovaries become tough, begin to dry out and fall off.

From the above, it is clear why the ovary of cucumbers can turn yellow.

Proper watering

Knowing why the ovary turns yellow in the greenhouse, what to do in this case? First of all, you need to understand why this happens: due to improper care of cucumbers, or the reason is incipient diseases. If the consequences of improper care are eliminated, and the ovaries continue to fall off, it means that the plants are sick and it is time to save them.

The ovary of cucumbers turns yellow in the greenhouse: what to do

In order to prevent the ovaries of cucumbers in the garden from drying out due to diseases, it is necessary to treat the whips and soil with special preparations. To save the plants, experts recommend strengthening the immunity of cucumbers with folk remedies:

  • 30 drops of iodine are diluted in a liter of milk, stirred and 9 liters of water are added. A tablespoon of liquid soap is added to the resulting solution. A similar mixture is sprayed with cucumber whips every 7 days.
  • Dilute 2 liters of whey in 10 liters of water, mix well and process the foliage on both sides.
  • Onion husks are diluted with water and boiled for 5 minutes, left to brew for a day.Then the solution is filtered and diluted with water to a volume of 5 liters. With this solution, all the lashes, soil are treated, and applied at the root.

Pest control

What to do if cucumber ovaries fall off due to an attack of pests? Usually, to combat them in open ground or in greenhouses, processing plants with folk remedies helps:

  • spraying with onion peel infusion or garlic infusion;
  • spraying with a solution of ammonia, for this, 45 ml of ammonia are diluted in 10 liters of water and cucumber lashes are treated;
  • for processing, a mixture of minerals is used: ½ glass of superphosphate and ¼ glass of potassium chloride;
  • use the following solution for the treatment of lashes: 2 tbsp. are diluted in 2 liters of water. l. soda and ½ a bar of laundry soap;
  • 150 g of ash is boiled in a liter of water for ½ hour, then diluted in 5 liters of water and the affected plants are treated.

Prevention

It is not difficult to grow cucumbers, but before planting, you need to take into account some points so that the plants can develop normally, and the ovaries do not start to dry:

  • choose the right varieties - pollinated species are suitable for open ground, it is better to grow self-pollinated or parthenocarpic hybrids in greenhouse conditions or on a windowsill;
  • cucumbers that require pollination are planted next to pollinating varieties;
  • this vegetable crop is planted in sunny places, without drafts. They are planted in different areas every year;
  • if it is decided to plant their own seeds, those of them that are at least three years old are selected for planting - they form mainly flowers of the female type;
  • fresh seeds are pickled or hardened - these procedures can reduce the number of male flowers on the lashes. You should also disinfect the planting material to protect the plants from disease.

You should not calmly watch how the ovaries of cucumbers fall off - you need to take all possible measures to correct the situation and get a good harvest of zelents as a result.
