Cabbage is a common agricultural vegetable crop that can be grown in almost all regions of the country. Frost-resistant, loves moisture, grows in sunny areas and does not like shading. Contains few calories and a lot of plant fiber. Therefore, it is a favorite vegetable in the kitchen of the hostess.

Gardeners and gardeners are happy to plant this crop in their area. The peculiarity of cabbage is that it can be planted in early spring and then harvested from mid-summer to late autumn. One of the most interesting and productive methods of plant cultivation is planting cabbage in open ground under bottles. However, before talking about this method of planting, it is worth talking about something else.

Depending on the varieties, early, mid-season and late cabbage are grown:

  • Early varieties - small and loose head of cabbage, go into use immediately, as they quickly crack and lose taste.
  • Mid-season - the head of cabbage is dense, larger, used for fermentation, but also not suitable for storage.
  • Late varieties - suitable for winter storage, fermentation, the head is large and resilient. If stored properly, vegetables will last until the next harvest.

When choosing cabbage, attention is paid to varieties that grow well and give high yields in the region of residence. You can purchase planting materials in specialized stores or order delivery by mail.

Soil preparation

Whatever method of planting cabbage the gardener chooses: seeds, seedlings, cabbage under bottles, the soil is prepared in the fall. Weeds are removed from the selected area, fertilizers (manure, bird droppings) are applied to the soil, the earth is dug up and left for the winter. In the spring, the earth is dug up again and wood ash is introduced.

Depending on the variety of cabbage, the distance between the bushes is different. In early plants, the bushes are small, so they can be planted closer to each other, at a distance of 25-30 cm. In medium and late varieties, the cabbage leaf is large - the plant must be planted keeping a distance of 35-45 cm. A good option would be to plant cabbage in two rows to the garden. The distance between the beds is at least 30 cm.

It is interesting! Dill can be planted in the same bed with cabbage - this will save space in the garden.

Cabbage under bottles

The bottoms of plastic bottles are cut off, but the lids are not removed (through them, watering and airing of the seedlings will take place). Before planting, it is advisable to treat the seeds with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Such treatment destroys harmful microorganisms and possible disease spores, and disinfection occurs. Then the planting material must be dried.

Attention! Most often purchased cabbage seeds do not need to be processed - they are ready for sowing.

To disinfect the earth, you can use another proven method: take a glass of baking soda, add a teaspoon of black pepper, mix in a bucket of water. Water the ground with this solution before planting cabbage. The product will help protect plants from keels and black legs; pepper in the composition drives away midges, aphids, insects. After that, you can proceed to disembarkation.

We plant cabbage under plastic bottles - step by step instructions:

  1. At the beginning, a small depression is made in the ground - a hole.
  2. Align the edges of the well with a glass bottle, slightly compacting the soil.
  3. Seeds are sown in the center of the hole. They are very small and it is not very convenient to choose one at a time. But you need to try to take as little as possible. In the future, you still have to leave only one sprout (the rest are removed).
  4. To cover the seeds, a mixture of peat and earth is prepared in equal proportions. You can buy this mixture at the store or make your own.
  5. This ends the sowing - the hole is covered with the top of the bottle, with the neck up. The lid remains closed.

Important! The bottle is not removed until it is time to open the seedlings for further free outdoor cultivation.

The first time after planting the seeds, it is not necessary to water them. The fact is that a certain microclimate is formed under the bottle, moisture remains, the air temperature is higher than outside. With this method of planting, early and friendly shoots are observed. After a few days, the first shoots appear.

When to remove bottle caps

When the first shoots appear, the covers begin to open daily, gradually increasing the airing time. Through the neck of the bottle, the plant is carefully watered, at the same time fresh air enters in, the seedlings are hardened. At the same time, pests and carriers of cabbage diseases do not get there.

Important! If it's too hot outside, you need to ventilate the cabbage longer and more often. Otherwise, the seedlings in the bottles will sprout.

Opening seedlings for outdoor cultivation

The main watering is done along the edge around the bottle. In this case, the water is completely absorbed into the ground and passes under the bottles. Experienced gardeners recommend using rainwater. However, in the absence of such, ordinary water is quite suitable - but it must be defended.

Cabbage is a plant with large leaves and needs a lot of oxygen. Therefore, when several pairs of leaves appear on the seedlings, the shelters should be removed. And pour earth or humus into the remaining circular holes.

Growing seedlings under bottles

Note! Plants grow well and quickly under plastic. If 3-4 sprouts hatch, it is too early to raise the shelter. You need to wait for at least 6-7 true leaves to appear.

When you clean the bottle greenhouse, it is clearly visible on the seedlings - there is definitely not enough space for large leaves. At this moment, the bottle is removed, carefully removing excess plants, leaving only one, the strongest and largest, bush. The rest of the shoots are not pulled out, but carefully cut with scissors so as not to damage the root of the main plant. Further, the seedlings grow in the open field.

The cabbage is spud, creating a mound of earth as high as possible to the lower leaf. In this case, the bush will put down additional roots underground and strengthen more. At first, it is advisable to water the seedlings with well-settled, warm water. Further care is the same as for all vegetable crops.

It is not difficult to grow cabbage outdoors under plastic bottles. It is enough to fertilize the land with high quality, choose a sunny plot for the garden, water abundantly, feed a little and protect it from pests.

Having figured out how to plant cabbage under plastic bottles, even novice gardeners will easily collect a good and rich harvest of vegetables.
