White cabbage is one of the most popular vegetable crops. It is in steady demand, so many farmers consider it promising for growing in commercial quantities. However, in order to make a profit, you need to choose the right variety, unpretentious, but with a high yield. Mother-in-law's cabbage just meets these criteria. This variety was bred by one of the largest seed producers - the Sedek agricultural company. It was added to the State Register in 2008, and in ten years it quickly gained popularity.

Main characteristics of the variety

The description of the mother-in-law cabbage variety should begin with the fact that it belongs to the group of mid-season varieties and hybrids. The duration of the period between the appearance of the first shoots and the onset of the so-called technical ripeness is 125-135 days. Taking this feature into account, it is advisable to immediately plant cabbage in the ground.

On a note! The variety is recommended for growing in Western Siberia, Altai and Perm Territories, in the Volga-Vyatka region.

The main characteristics of the variety:

  • germination rate averages 95%,
  • the leaf rosette of the cabbage Mother-in-law is large, raised, the leaves themselves are large, they are distinguished by a grayish-green color with a noticeable waxy bloom and a characteristic slightly wavy edge of the plate,
  • heads of cabbage are large, light green in color (they are yellowish-white on the cut), the average weight is 2.5-3 kg, but there are also larger specimens. Heads of cabbage have a good internal texture and high density, which is estimated at 4 points,
  • the yield of the variety is 580-650 c / ha, which is generally higher than the indicators for the mid-season group,
  • the yield of marketable products is 90%, therefore cabbage is considered suitable for commercial cultivation.

Heads of cabbage do not crack during transportation, they are good at resisting diseases and pests. Like many mid-season varieties, this cabbage can withstand freezing temperatures. Seeds germinate well at a soil temperature of + 16-18 degrees. But it is better to harvest before they occur, since at the first frost the heads of cabbage can crack.

The dietary properties of Mother-in-Law's cabbage make it in demand. It is a low-calorie product with an energy value of 25 kcal per 100 g. Cabbage contains carbohydrates, fiber, B vitamins, ascorbic acid, a set of macro- and microelements (these are potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, copper, fluorine and others) ...

Features of agricultural technology

Compliance with the rules of caring for varietal seedlings allows you to get a bountiful harvest. This variety is good because it is suitable for both experienced farmers and beginner gardeners who have not previously dealt with this crop. If the owner of the site is interested in cabbage, the mother-in-law variety will attract him with its unpretentiousness. This species grows well on loamy soils with a medium acidity level. The culture requires good light, otherwise the leaves and heads of cabbage will slow down growth.

It should be noted that in this variety, the outlet becomes quite powerful and spreading, so the plant will require space. Seeds are planted in the soil to a depth of 0.5-1 cm. The distance between plantings should be such that ripening heads of cabbage do not interfere with each other (maximum 3 pieces per 1 sq. M). The first shoots usually appear no earlier than a week later. The harvest on the cabbage bed ripens in about 4 months.

Important! Before planting in the soil, the seeds must be treated. Two weeks before planting in the ground, hardening begins to increase the plant's resistance to diseases.

The seeds are immersed in a solution of potassium permanganate of low concentration (no more than 5 g per 0.5 liters of water). Processing time is 20 minutes. After that, the seeds are thoroughly washed.

When growing this variety, you should adhere to the following recommendations:

  • watering should be regular so that the size and other parameters of the head of cabbage do not lag behind the norm. For this, water at room temperature is used,
  • hilling cabbage is done twice. The first time this is done three weeks after planting, the second time after another two weeks. This helps to strengthen the plant's rhizome and accelerate the growth of the heads. In addition, hilling helps to protect the cabbage from weeds, which could take away nutrients and heat from the soil,
  • top dressing. This variety requires the use of different types of fertilizers - mineral and organic. In the first case, chicken manure is used, in the second, potassium monophosphate, superphosphate, etc. After two weeks, you can re-fertilize by slightly increasing the dosage of fertilizer. In the future, there is no need for top dressing, except in cases when the heads of cabbage ripen too slowly.

It is also necessary to control pests. The main threats are caterpillars, aphids, cruciferous fleas. They reduce the quality of the crop and its quantity, and can affect the reduction in the size of the head. You can fight them not only with the help of pesticides, but also by using natural remedies - garlic broth or tobacco tincture. They are prepared the same way - 1-1.5 kg of active ingredient (peeled garlic or tobacco) per bucket of water. Cruciferous flea beetles are removed with a soapy solution, and this must be done promptly, since they multiply quickly. But the caterpillars will have to be collected by hand.

Cabbage Mother-in-law

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Mother-in-law cabbage has several important benefits:

  • smooth, well-formed heads of cabbage that ripen together at the same time,
  • delicate taste, no pungency and not dry,
  • suitability for sufficiently long transportation.
  • the possibility of consumption both fresh and for fermentation.

This variety also has disadvantages. Firstly, it is suitable only for short-term storage (on average 3-4 months, that is, heads of cabbage can last a maximum of February).

Breeders are trying to improve even the most popular varieties, and this one is no exception. The same company offers its customers such options as Golden Mother-in-law and Mother-in-law cabbage. Each of them has its own advantages.

Cabbage Golden Mother-in-law is an improved variety. Its main characteristics largely coincide with those of Mother-in-law cabbage, but some even surpass them. Cabbage Golden mother-in-law is a mid-season high-yielding variety. It gives even, very dense heads of cabbage, slightly more juicy than that of Mother-in-law's cabbage, and distinguished by a large weight - they can reach 5 kg. One of its advantages is great taste. This cabbage can also be consumed both fresh and sauerkraut. Moreover, in salting, it is even tastier than other varieties.

Cabbage needs watering

There is also a mid-season cabbage Mother-in-law, the description says that this is a hybrid. Its heads of cabbage are slightly different in appearance - they are flat-round in shape, with a delicate taste and a sugary structure. Their weight is less than that of the mother-in-law's cabbage, it does not exceed 1.5-2 kg. The advantages of this hybrid are not only taste, but also higher resistance to diseases and pests.

Thus, the mother-in-law's cabbage, although it is not devoid of certain drawbacks and is inferior to other varieties and hybrids in some respects, is still one of the best varieties of this culture. If you follow all the rules of agricultural technology, you can get a bountiful harvest, while the heads of cabbage will be large, dense, healthy and tasty.
