Experienced gardeners have long learned how to plant cabbage in open ground with seeds. This method is suitable for summer residents who do not have a greenhouse and the ability to constantly visit the site. And it will also appeal to novice gardeners, because this method is economical in time and money.

Correct planting by seeds

How to plant cabbage in open ground with seeds

Cabbage loves neutral or slightly acidic soil, abundant watering and an unshaded place. The acidity index of the soil should not exceed 6 pH, otherwise the soil must be calcareous.

At what time to sow cabbage in open ground depends on the climatic conditions of the region. The seed begins to germinate at a soil temperature of 15-18 ° C and an air temperature of 12-15 ° C. At the same time, early maturing varieties are not afraid of frosts down to -5 ° C, but such cabbage cannot be stored for a long time and is not suitable for conservation.

Approximate terms for sowing cabbage in a seedless way for the Moscow region according to the lunar calendar:

  • early varieties are sown in the first decade of May;
  • medium late varieties - at the end of April;
  • late varieties - in mid-April.

In the southern regions (for example, in the Astrakhan region), cabbage can be sown already from the beginning of March, in the northern regions it is not worth planting earlier than May 15.

Important! The vegetative period of early cabbage varieties in a seedless way is 100 days, late -150 days. If the summer is long in the landing sites, then late varieties can also be grown.

Some people like to harvest cabbage after frost. This is due to the fact that the slightly frozen vegetable acquires a different, more intense taste, moreover, it will be stored until spring.

The species that are early maturing and are most suitable for planting in open ground with seeds:

  • early white-headed;
  • Chinese cabbage;
  • broccoli;
  • kohlrabi.

Early maturing varieties can be planted in the ground until the end of June. Their ripening period is on average 90 days.

To begin with, the earth in the garden bed is heated. To do this, in early April, the land is covered with plastic wrap. Spunbond in this case will not work, since it does not let the sun's rays through, so the soil will not warm up. After a week, you can start planting. The optimum temperature for seed germination in the soil is 15 ° C. The ground temperature at a depth of 5-10 cm should be equal to 8 ° C.

Important! The bed should be dug up with a pitchfork, weed roots should be removed, and earth clods should be broken. If no fertilizing was previously applied to the ground, then in the process organic fertilizers, for example, manure or humus, should be added to the soil. Then everything needs to be well watered several times.

Planting cabbage in open ground with seeds is carried out according to a certain scheme. It is different for each variety of cabbage:

  • An early white cabbage plant is planted at a distance of 30 cm from each other, and a gap of 40 cm is made between the rows.
  • Cauliflower is planted 25 cm apart, 50 cm between rows.
  • Broccoli: between plants - 35 cm, between rows - half a meter.
  • Mid-season white cabbage is planted at a distance of half a meter from each other, and 60 cm between rows.
  • The late one is planted 60 cm between the holes, 70 cm between the rows.
  • Brussels sprouts: half a meter between sprouts and the same distance between rows.

Next, the bed is again covered with polyethylene. After the emergence of sprouts, one of the strongest is left in each hole, the rest are cut with scissors.

Important! In no case should you pull out excess plants, otherwise the root system of the remaining seedling may suffer, and this will lead to its death.

Planting cabbage under plastic bottles

There is a second way, how to plant cabbage seeds in open ground. Plastic bottles are used for this method.

First, the garden bed, as in the first case, is dug up, fertilized if necessary, and thoroughly watered. Further, according to the chosen scheme, holes are made using the bottom of a glass bottle: they need to push the earth by 2 cm, making a depression. Next, 3-4 seeds are placed in the hole. It is best to cover them with humus, thereby fertilizing them for the future. The well is closed with the top of a plastic bottle, from which the bottom has been cut off. It should be sprinkled with earth a little so that it will not be blown away by the wind in the future. This method allows you to create your own microclimate for each sprout of cabbage.

Watering can be done through the neck of the bottle by unscrewing the cap, or you can simply moisten the ground around this small greenhouse. In hot weather, plants need to be opened, allowing them to breathe, and closed again at night, keeping warm inside. The bottles are completely removed from the cabbage only when it ceases to fit in them.

Bottles can be replaced with large plastic cups. In this case, a hole is also made on the bottom, which is covered with earth or plugged with a cotton swab.

Important! If cabbage seeds are planted in the open ground in mid-May in the Middle Lane, then it is not necessary to cover the garden bed, because severe frosts will most likely not come anymore.
