Breeding this breed of quail does not require additional efforts, they need to be taken care of as usual. As a result, the Texas quail will delight the farmer with tasty and healthy meat, as well as exquisite quail eggs.

General information

In the Russian Federation, quail breeding has been common for at least 20 years. Initially, most attention was paid to oviparous birds. Recently, along with this, growing meat quail is gaining strength.

Quail Texans are a meat breed. This species is the result of the work carried out by the breeders. When it was removed, the goals were pursued by:

  • improving the taste and quality of quail meat;
  • improving the productivity of this breed;
  • the obtained traits, the achieved results are important to pass on to descendants, therefore, the issues of inheritance of positive changes were also important when breeding.

Texas quail

When working on the Texas White Quail, Japanese, as well as some broiler bird breeds were used. As you know, the latter are characterized by rapid weight gain. This quail color inherited from the English White breed.

Breed characteristics

The weight of a male of this breed is 370 g, of a female - 480 g. The meat yield from one bird is, on average, up to 260 g. There are some cases when females weighed half a kilo or more. However, all such situations should be considered as a pathology - this weight, first of all, is explained by obesity. Females of this weight are of little use for breeding.

The appearance features of Texas quails are as follows:

  1. The birds have a stocky and dense build.
  2. The bird's back is wide, arched. The quail's chest protrudes slightly forward.
  3. The eyes are of a dark uniform color, the neck is short, the head is medium in size.
  4. The plumage of this species of birds is white with the presence of small black specks. The tail of the Texas broiler is short.
  5. Legs are muscular.
  6. The shade of the beak of the Texas quail is light; in some birds, its tip is black.

When a Texas White quail is seen, the characteristic of its behavior is mainly poise and calm nature. Shyness is not inherent in him. Some consider Texas white quails to be somewhat phlegmatic.

Not shy

It is believed that the content of this breed, bred in Texas, does not impose any special requirements. However, in order to obtain good results, it is necessary to raise quail in accordance with certain conditions.

White Pharaoh quail females begin to lay eggs 60 days after birth. The eggs weigh between 12 and 14 g. Although this breed is bred for meat, broiler quail eggs are also very useful. They have a therapeutic effect in case of radioactive irradiation, help in situations where there are disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as in some other cases.

The description of the Texas quail breed suggests that the bird meat has an exquisite taste. It is tender, its calorie content is less than that of chicken meat. Unfortunately, Texas quails are prone to obesity. If you do not follow the diet, then the meat can lose its quality.

Due to obesity, meat will lose its taste

Although this bird is valuable as a meat breed, the productivity of white quails is manifested in high egg production. In one year, the Texas quail is capable of laying at least 20 dozen eggs. Moreover, quail eggs are widely known for their taste and usefulness.

Broiler quail laying hens peak in the fifth and sixth months. Such productivity is combined with an insufficiently high percentage of fertilization.

From the moment of birth, White quails gain weight quickly. It is not uncommon for birds to weigh at least 150 grams at five weeks of age.

Important! With good productivity, the amount of feed that birds of this breed consume is not higher than when raising most other bird species.

Breeding features

If a farmer is going to breed Texas quails, then it is necessary to allocate a place where he will keep them. For this, ten to fifteen square meters are enough.

Ensure that birds of the Texas breed always have fresh air. To do this, you will need to provide ventilation and check that there are no drafts in this room.

You also need to think about lighting. It should be of high quality, but not too bright. Otherwise, it can badly affect the birds. In bright light, quails are under severe stress. Their concern will be expressed in the fact that they will begin to peck at everything that is next to them. Other birds or eggs laid by females may be injured. Other irritants can have a similar effect if they are strong enough.

Important! The house must be protected from predators entering it.

Care must be taken to provide the birds with optimal levels of warmth and humidity. Deviations of these parameters, both in one and the other direction, can lead to diseases. The minimum temperature for adult birds is 18 degrees Celsius, humidity should be within 55-60%.

For normal development, quails need balanced feeding.

In practice, it is convenient to use compound feed for broilers. One bird will need 40-50 g of such feed during the day.

When raising birds at home, you can feed them with corn kernels.

At all times, Texas quails must have access to clean drinking water in any reasonable amount.

Drinkers

It is known that quail females have no brooding instinct. Therefore, as soon as they lay eggs, they need to be sent for incubation.

Advantages and disadvantages

This breed has important advantages:

  1. Weight gain is fast and efficient.
  2. Chicks have good meat growth characteristics.
  3. The meat has a pleasant dietary taste.
  4. In the process of laying eggs, problems are extremely rare.
  5. The breed has very low requirements for breeding conditions.
  6. The cost of growing is much less than in similar cases.
  7. After the completion of processing, the meat has a good presentation.
  8. Feathering is done with little effort.

Along with the positive aspects, the birds of this breed also have certain disadvantages:

  1. The egg production level can be characterized as medium or lower.
  2. Fertility and hatchability parameters are low. Usually they are about 60%.
  3. The differences between males and females are so insignificant that it is very difficult to distinguish them visually. In most cases, the female is identified after she has laid the eggs.
  4. Male activity is low.
  5. Newly hatched chicks are in poor health.

Breeding birds of this breed will allow the farm to get quality meat and eggs, while caring for them does not require much effort.
