The life of freshly cut flowers is very short: the average shelf life is 5 days, some species can stand in water for about 20 days, but then invariably wither. That is why plant stabilization was invented, the task of which is to extend the short life of flowers.

What are stabilized flowers and where are they used?

Stabilized flowers are living plants. These are not artificial flowers or dried flowers. Their life was extended by special methods. They retain their fresh appearance and bright natural color for a long time: stabilized plants can delight for years.

The stabilization method is pretty simple. The natural juice of a freshly cut plant is replaced with a special composition based on glycerin. This unique technology allows keeping flowers intact for about 2-3 years, and trees for up to 10 years. They do not need to be kept in a vase of water; they do not require watering or feeding. Their appearance, even after a long time, will remain magnificent. As a result, florists have a new opportunity to express themselves and expand the field for their activities.

The most popular among buyers are stabilized roses in flasks. The invariably fresh look and bright colors delight the eye. However, they cost quite a lot: the average price of one rose in a flask in stores is 3000-3500 rubles *.

It is more profitable to make a canned rose at home, moreover, it is a fairly simple process. This will be the cheapest method to preserve your favorite flower. How to make a stabilized rose at home

The methods are suitable not only for roses, but also for chrysanthemums, gerberas, etc. For the stabilization process, flowers and plants with a dense stem must be selected. Individual buds, leaves and herbs can be preserved. All flowers must be freshly cut. You need to give them time to dry out a little, literally a couple of hours, then cut the tip of the stem by about a centimeter with a sharp knife or pruner.

There are several ways to stabilize roses at home:

  • A special composition is being prepared. To do this, combine glycerin and clean, filtered water in a 1: 1 ratio. Place the plant in a container with the prepared solution. It should be kept in this solution for 2 weeks, while every day of the first week, be sure to cut the stems by half a centimeter. During the preservation process, avoid direct sunlight and high humidity in order to obtain a good result. Add solution as needed. During this time, moisture will evaporate, and glycerin will penetrate into plant cells, replacing water.
  • The same glycerin and water are used, only in a different proportion - 1: 2. The solution must be heated to +70 degrees. Place the plants in the cooled solution very carefully. Leave them on for 15-20 days. Flowers with thin stems and loose buds need 15 days, with thick stems and lush inflorescences - 20 days. The flower jar should also be removed to a cool, dark place.
  • Conservation with paraffin. This method works well for plants with thick, hollow stems. Melt the paraffin in a water bath. Fill the hollow stem of the flower and the capsule with a syringe without a needle. You can stabilize flowers with paraffin by dipping. The plant is completely immersed in warm paraffin, immediately taken out and cooled. To dry, you need to hang the flower by the stem.

Glycerin formulations are very suitable for stabilizing roses at home. A rose stabilized in this way retains its shape well. The color may darken a little, but this will not lose the flower in any way in beauty.

Note! If you want to tint the rose, then you need to add a dye to the solution. For this purpose, ordinary food coloring is used, it is cheap and is often sold in grocery stores.

Recommendations of experienced florists

White flowers are best suited for coloring. The glycerin composition will fill all the veins, and it will be on the white buds that this will be most noticeable and beautiful.

On a note! A stabilized rose does not need to be placed in water. You can put it in a pot of dry sand. Watering is not required, just sometimes you need to gently dust it off. If handled carefully, the flower will last long enough.

Stabilized flowers are a joy for a long time. Perhaps it will be a purchased plant. Even more joy and pride will be brought by a hand-made stabilized flower.
