The English rose variety, called Roald Dahl, is a splendid crop with vibrant peach flowers. The rose is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the famous British writer Roald Dahl. Bred by renowned breeders in the company of David Austin.

General characteristics of the variety

The history of this variety begins in 2009. At that time, 96 thousand seedlings were bred in the English nursery, one of which was the Roald Dahl rose. The author of the breeding development was personally David Austin. The presentation of the new rose took place in 2016 at the Chelsea Flower Show.

This rose stood out among other flowers at the very beginning of the selection process.

It is interesting! Part of the money from the sale of this rose goes to the Roald Dahl’s Marvelous Children’s Charity, which helps seriously ill children.

The buds are colored orange with a reddish tint. Gradually opening, they turn into cup-shaped rosettes of a lighter tone. Flowers are freely and evenly distributed throughout the shrub.

Rose Roald Dahl

The rose blooms continuously. The shrub is resistant to bad weather and cold weather. The scent of flowers is reminiscent of the scent of a tea rose with an admixture of fruity notes.

The Roald Dahl rose bush has a spherical shape and branched stems. There are very few thorns on the stems, which allows you to take care of the crop easily and freely.

Features of culture

The flower has the following description:

  • The bush has a high level of decorativeness. In the process of growth and development, it becomes more rounded, bright, fluffy.
  • Rose leaves have a rich green color.
  • Peduncles grow up to 1.2 meters in height.

The attractive and not too original appearance of the culture, as well as the winter hardiness and disease resistance of the variety, make it possible to grow the D. Austin Roald Dahl rose in almost any garden or summer cottage.

Attention! Inexperienced flower lovers misinterpret the English variety name Roald Dahl Rose and write the Royal Dahl rose. This name is incorrect!

Growing and care

Soil preparation

Soil pH values should be neutral. For planting, a soil rich in mineral and organic substances, loosened, permeable is recommended.

Roald Dahl prefers areas well lit by the sun, but at the same time tolerates partial shade well. It is best that the space in which the culture is grown is as accessible to light as possible and well ventilated. It is recommended that the roses be in the sun for most of the day.

For the normal growth and development of Roald Dahl's rose, it is necessary to provide her with a good drainage system.

The rosary should consist of several seedlings. A single landing won't work here. The depth of one pit is about 70 cm, the same diameter. The bottom of the pit is covered with a non-woven fabric that will prevent nutrients from leaching out of the soil.

Ideal Potting Mix for Roald Dahl Rose:

  • one third of peat-based garden land with neutral pH;
  • a third part of loam (if it is not possible to find fertile loamy soil, it can be replaced with oven clay);
  • also 1/3 of garden compost or humus.

It is recommended to add a little bone meal to the mixture, so that in the first year after planting the rose flowers, additional feeding is not needed.

Poorly drained soils with a high peat content (layer more than 1 meter thick) are completely unsuitable for this rose.If the peat layer is small and there is clay under it, then the plant will feel comfortable after raising the rose garden above the ground level.

The planting ridges must be raised at least 30 cm above the ground. Each bed must be 1 meter or more wide. Along the border, masonry or wood cladding is created, which will prevent the destruction of the landing structure, and also give it a finished look.

Planting a rose

The seedlings are sold in three varieties:

  • with an open root system;
  • packed in polyethylene;
  • in containers.

In the latter case, the plants can be rooted during the entire period when the weather is warm, dry. Crops with an open root system and packaged are planted at the moment when the frosts come off and the soil softens.

Planting a rose

Roses are planted with a depth of 3-5 cm (if the soil is heavy) or 7-10 cm (if the soil is sandy). In this way, they protect the place of inoculation of the flower from sudden cold snaps. Over time, on the part that is underground, root branches are formed, to which the plant gradually completely passes.

Preparing for winter

For the winter, roses need to provide shelter. Set it when the thermometer is constantly at minus 5 degrees. If we talk about the climate in most Russian regions, this temperature is set in the second decade of November.

Top dressing roses

In late August - early September, the culture is fed with fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium, or, as a cumulative option, potassium monophosphate. It contains both of these elements in the desired ratio and in a soluble form. Top dressing is applied under roses after watering (if precipitation fell a little earlier, you can do without this procedure). For the entire season, fertilizers are applied twice: the first - in the 3rd decade of August, the second - in mid-September. Later dates are inappropriate, since the root system is no longer able to absorb solutions.

Roald Dahl's rose is a rather demanding variety. This is because the plant produces many medium-sized flowers as well as a large number of fairly large leaves.

To maintain active development and lush flowering, it is necessary to provide the bushes with a balanced diet. All nutrients required for growth must be contained in the soil or supplied as fertilizers. If organic feeding is required, wood ash or horn-hoof meal can be used.

Top dressing roses

Mulching should be done every spring with compost or manure. It is recommended to use specialized liquid fertilizers as mineral fertilizers. They are added every 10 days or 2 weeks no later than the 20th of July.

At the end of summer and in September, top dressing should not contain nitrogen. During this period, as mentioned earlier, potassium monophosphate should be used. Thanks to him, the plant becomes stronger, the shoots ripen, which contributes to a successful wintering.

Disease prevention

If you follow the rules of growing and caring for roses, the risk of disease is significantly reduced. However, these actions cannot provide full protection. In addition, adverse weather conditions contribute to the development of diseases such as powdery mildew and black spot.

To prevent their occurrence, rose foliage must be sprayed with fermented milk serum. This method is only suitable for prevention. If the disease has already appeared, it will have to be dealt with with the help of special chemicals.

From mid-July until the end of the summer season, weather conditions are created under which such problems arise. During this time, it usually rains more frequently, and the weather is cold at night.

Spraying roses.

As a preventive measure, roses are sprayed. The first time this is done after the leaves have finally bloomed (this period falls on May-June). The procedure is repeated in July before unfavorable weather conditions are established.

It is recommended to choose a day for prevention, during which there will be no precipitation after the procedure for the next 5 hours. During this time, the solution will have time to penetrate the foliage tissue and will protect the flower for 2 weeks.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Rosa Roald Dahl has a number of advantages, but at the same time, it also has some disadvantages.

Among the advantages of this variety are the following:

  • high decorative properties that make a vivid impression;
  • frost resistance of the rose bush;
  • weak susceptibility to disease;
  • versatility (the appearance allows you to grow flowers in almost any area, both single and composite).

There are almost no flaws in the Roald Dahl rose, with the exception of high requirements for care and maintenance.

Thanks to the continuous flowering, these roses will invariably delight others with their bright appearance and wonderful aroma throughout the season. The main condition for this is a competent approach to the process of growing a crop and caring for it. Rosa Roald Dahl is relatively young and is still little known in Russia. However, there is already growing interest from flower lovers.
