The bouquet of roses received as a gift can delight the eye with its beauty for a long time if you try to root cut flowers. This is quite possible at home. The process of breeding a rose is not very difficult and even beginner growers can do it. However, in order to do everything right, you need to know exactly how to grow a cut rose sapling.

How to cut a rose for breeding

To germinate a rose from a vase, the cuttings method is used. It is especially effective to grow climbing, miniature or Floribunda roses in this way. Park and hybrid tea varieties are not suitable for this purpose.

Note!Rooting is most successful in the countries in which they were grown. Germination of imported roses is almost impossible, since before transportation they are treated with various chemicals in order to preserve their presentation.

Cuttings are recommended to be made from a fresh bouquet, since the longer the flowers are in the vase, the less nutrients remain in the stem. Ideally, roses should be slightly open.

How to cut a rose for breeding

There is a step-by-step guide for preparing cuttings. This requires:

  1. Choose the right rose. The middle, semi-lignified part of the stem is best suited for this purpose.
  2. Cut the cuttings. In length, they should be 15-30 cm. It is advisable to choose stems as thick as a pencil, with 2-3 buds in the area of the future cutting. Cut only with a well-sharpened knife. The upper cut should be straight and 1-2 cm above the upper kidney. The lower cut is made under the lower kidney at an angle of 45 °.
  3. Remove all flowers, buds and leaves from the bottom of the cutting. Thorns can also be trimmed slightly.
  4. Trim the leaves in half at the top.

Ready cuttings should be placed in a jar with settled water for 10-12 hours. For the best effect, a growth stimulant can be added to the water, for example, root or heteroauxin solution (use according to the instructions). Aloe juice (20 drops per glass of water), or honey water (1 teaspoon of honey per glass) will also work.

Additional Information! For better absorption of nutrients from the solution, you can split the lower part of the cutting with a secateurs 6-7 millimeters.

Preparing for landing

To prepare the landing site, you can use a universal soil or mix it yourself from black soil and vermiculite. From above you need to sprinkle the earth with river sand. To grow a room rose, a drain should be placed at the bottom of the pot to get rid of excess water when watering. Both the garden soil and the potted soil must be watered abundantly before placing the seedling.

How to properly plant a cut rose in the ground

There are several ways to root a cut rose. Each of them has its own characteristics and is suitable for a particular season.

Propagating roses using potatoes

Young medium-sized potatoes are peeled off and a hole is made in the center, where a cutting dipped in a nutrient solution is inserted. Then the stalk in the potato is added with earth to the lower bud. After that, it is covered with a glass jar, which acts like a greenhouse. Watering is carried out every 2-3 days. Once a week, you can water the plant with sweetened water (2 teaspoons of sugar in a glass of water).

Important!Only cuttings no longer than 20 cm can be germinated in this way.

After two weeks, you can start removing the can for a few hours. This is done so that the seedling gradually adapts to dry air and temperature changes. It is worth over and over again to increase the time spent without a can. By the third week, the jar can be removed completely, but even after that, watering should be continued to allow the plant to grow stronger.

The advantage of this method is that the potato serves as a nutrient medium for the cuttings, simultaneously protecting it from dangerous microorganisms. It is better to carry it out in the spring, so that when transplanting into the ground, the difference in temperature conditions for the seedling is less noticeable.

Sprouting roots in a jar of water

Roses can also be propagated in water. To do this, it is placed in a jar of growth-stimulating solution for about two weeks. The seedling should be in a well-lit, ventilated area, not exposed to direct sunlight. The water in the bank is not changed, but it is regularly topped up. After the first weak roots germinate, the seedling can be planted in a pot and covered with a jar. Remove the jar in the same way as when germinating from potatoes.

This method is good because it can be done in autumn and winter. It is most suitable for miniature roses.

Important! With this method, miniature roses, unlike the others, do not need to be covered with a jar.

Bedding

In summer, cuttings can be planted directly in a previously prepared place. This is done at an angle of 45 °, leaving one or two buds on the surface. Then the seedlings are covered with plastic bottles or glass jars. The land around these mini-greenhouses must be kept moist. The roots begin to grow in about a month, but it is better to leave the bottles until spring, so that the root system of the rose has time to develop.

Further care

The first year after planting a rose in the ground, it is necessary to cut off the young shoots and buds that have appeared so that more nutrients are supplied to the roots. This will allow the plant to accumulate strength before wintering without jars. Top dressing and watering should be carried out in the same way as for adult bushes.

Important! In regions with cold climates in the first year, seedlings must be transplanted into a pot for the winter and stored in a cool room at above-zero temperatures, occasionally watering. In the spring they can be transplanted into the garden again.

If you follow the above recommendations, you can easily propagate a rose from a bouquet in your house or apartment. Such a rose is more demanding on the soil and will react more sharply to a cold climate, but with proper attention and care, it will take root well and will not differ much from roses grown from seeds.
