Dahlia, or rather dahlia, is one of the largest, most beautiful and elegant flowers in our gardens and summer cottages. Hobbyists and professionals alike plant hundreds of varieties in their gardens and nurseries every year. The name - dahlia exists only in Russian, in the rest of the world it is customary to call it "dahlia".

History and characteristics

Dahlia (dahlia) comes from South America, where the local Indians called it "chichipatl", which means "hollow tube" or "flower with a hollow stem".

Here, perhaps, only this hollow stem has preserved the flower from those times to the present day. Everything else has undergone significant changes as a result of centuries of selection.

It is important! In the regions, it is possible to preserve planting material only by digging out tubers and storing them in winter in rooms with a temperature of at least 2 degrees and not higher than 8 degrees Celsius, with moderate humidity.

There are many varieties of dahlias, but the conditions for the landing site are the same for everyone - a lot of sun, a lot of heat, fertile soil with regular moisture and protection from the wind, in the form of hedges and supports. Sprouted dahlia tubers are planted in open ground when the threat of return frosts has passed or night shelters are provided for earlier planting. Annual dahlias are sown for seedlings in greenhouses or on a window a month before the intended planting of seedlings in the ground.

Tubers are dug up in the fall after the first frost, when the foliage will bear clear signs of frost damage, before laying a lump of earth with tubers for storage, they are well dried, or the tubers are cleaned from the ground and dipped in a clay mash.

Additional Information... The color of dahlias often depends on the presence of certain elements in the soil; the same variety, planted in different places, may differ in the intensity of color.
