Geykhera is a perennial herbaceous crop of the Saxifrage family. The natural habitat is the rocky regions of North America. The plant got its name in honor of the German botanist, physician Johann Heinrich von Heicher.

The bushes of the plant are small, with an average height of 50 cm, compact. The main feature is the unusual leaves. Their colors change more than once a season. Among the whole variety of varieties (more than 65 species), several of the most popular varieties stand out.

Heuchera hybrid: description

This culture is obtained by crossing American, hairy and small-flowered heuchera. The leaves are predominantly green, and purple, purple, brown colors are also found. They have contrasting streaks, cream blotches. Leaf plates have blunt or sharp ends. The edges of the leaves are wavy.

The flowers are white, pink, red, coral. Flowering lasts at least two months. Disadvantage - flowers can fall off from rains, winds.

Geichera Mars

An adult plant reaches a height of 20 cm. The leaves are large, velvety, wavy, light green, when they bloom, they become crimson, have a silvery pattern. Over time they acquire a brown color.

The flowers are white. Flowering lasts 2 months. The culture has good winter hardiness.

Geichera Georgia Plum

The height of the bushes is 30 cm, the diameter is 40 cm.

The culture grows quickly, blooms in May-June, winter-hardy, it will survive frosts down to -35 degrees.

The leaves are velvety, pink-purple (flowers of the same shades), have a silvery-pinkish bloom, streaks of plum shades.

Note! Geichera Georgia Plum, like any variety, can suffer from sunburn, drying out in the spring. Therefore, with the onset of spring, it is necessary to shade, water the culture.

Geichera Van Gogh

The plant is compact, 25 cm high. The leaves of the hybrid are golden-green, have burgundy-red streaks, white or cream specks. The underside of the leaf blades is pinkish, then turns red. The flowers are pink-red. Flowering lasts 2 months.

The disadvantage is the possible lodging of flowers from winds, rains.

Heuchera hybrid Mars

It grows up to 20-40 cm in height. Differs in an unusual color of the leaves: reddish-silver. It blooms in the middle of summer, flowers are beige.

Agrotechnics

Heuchera loves light, fertile, loose, deeply drained (20 cm), moist soils, while there should be no stagnant water on them. The optimum pH is 5-6. River sand and pebbles are taken for drainage.

The plant prefers an openwork shade. It is best to plant it on the eastern side of areas where there is sun in the morning.

Landing

There are two ways to plant a plant:

  • seeds in open ground in April or grown through seedlings from March, it will germinate in 1 - 1.5 months;
  • seedlings can be purchased at the store.

Bushes are planted, deepening by 3 - 4 cm. In the spring (in the Middle Lane - at the end of May) leave a distance of 25 cm between them. You can plant fruit trees, berry bushes in the near-trunk zones.

Dig planting holes 30X30 centimeters. Crushed red brick or expanded clay is placed on the bottom. Mix garden soil with humus, compost, add ash.

Before planting the plants, shorten the roots a little, dust them with crushed coal. Bushes are planted in holes, covered with earth, watered.

Note! The soil should not dry out.

Care

Moderate watering is required (in hot weather 2 - 3 times a week), after watering, mulch with dry grass, peat, sawdust.

The first year after planting, feeding is not needed. In subsequent years, mineral fertilizers are applied (the dosage is made 2 times less than according to the instructions) before the beginning, as well as after flowering, sprinkled with ash.

They sprinkle the bushes with sawdust, bark once a season. Plants rejuvenate every 3-4 years. Heuchera is propagated by dividing the bush. Divide so that each piece has at least 5 stems. Can be grown by seeds, cuttings.

During the growing season, faded flowers, old, dry leaves are removed.

Note! It is undesirable for water droplets to fall on the leaves when watering. The plant can get burned.

In the fall, heuchera is prepared for winter. The bushes are sprinkled with a mixture of sand, peat, tree bark. Leaves are not cut, they serve as additional insulation. Fall asleep from above with dry foliage (preferably oak), cover with spruce branches or lutrasil. In the spring, they remove the shelter, cut off last year's leaves. If the plants were planted in containers, they are brought into the basement or on the insulated veranda.

Flowers are used for cutting, planted in single plantings, group compositions. They can decorate curbs, ridges, rocky gardens. Heuchera is grown in gardens, parks, summer cottages, flower beds. The culture is combined with almost all flowers and plants.
